Wanted your thoughts re: Swine Flu. UPDATE: First Case just hit Walt Disney in Orlando--That's where I am going!
I am flying on Friday to Fl and I wanted to know if you think I am being over dramatic that I want to wear a mask (like a dr.) on the plane.
With all of the recycled air, I really don't want to take the chance. Now that they are also saying this thing could have also been sparked from California as well--who the hell knows who will be on my plane.
thoughts?
ETA-Now I will be on a plane to Orlando where a new case just rose. I may wear a hazmat suit on the plane--EFF IT

If it'll help put your mind at ease and the airline has no problem with it (they shouldn't), you should do it. Sorry you're stressed.

Re: Wanted your thoughts re: Swine Flu
I am flying on Tuesday ( ) and I think my DH wil FORCE me to wear one.
normally he wouldn't care...but now I am carrying his kid around so suddenly he's Mr. Concerned
I don't think there is anything wrong with wearing one. I am sure you won't be the only one. do what makes you feel good.

Re: Wanted your thoughts re: Swine Flu
The swine flu, like most any flu, according to all the doctors on just about EVERY news network, is passed almost exclusively thru hand to hand contact. Many are saying the masks are really not going to prevent much of anything at all.
If you come into physical contact with someone and then touch your mouth or anything like that, that is more likely how you'd get the flu. So I think the most important thing you can keep on you during a flight is anti-bacterial lotion and use it often whenever touching anything!
ETA: i'm sure a mask is not a bad idea--but just don't want people to forget that the more likely way to contract any type of flu is thru contact!

What she said. A mask insn't likely to do much good. wash your hands ALOT. Hot water and soap is your best weapon. Have a great trip

They actually said it's more likely hand to hand transmission? That's not what I have been hearing.
With viruses, it is just as likely to get the flu from touching SOMETHING contaminated, then touching your eyes, nose, mouth. Or just as likely if someone sitting next to you on a plane sneezes. They just said on the news this am the swine flu virus can live on INANIMATE objects for 72 hrs, so hand to hand isn't the main source of transmission. It's more so hand to eyes, nose, mouth, after touching ANYTHING infected.
I say bring the mask and if ANYONE is coughing, sneezing, put that baby on! And of course plenty of hand sanitizer.

I apologize--it didn't come out the way I wanted it too.
I meant what you were saying -- that if you have physical contact with anything that has the virus--that is more than likely how it is spread...thru touching something or someone that has the flu virus on it and then touching your mouth or eyes. Meaning, that the mask is good precaution...BUT in reality it is not nearly as effective as continually washing your hands and using anti-bacterial lotions and gels.

Wash your hands alot on the plane or bring hand sanitizer.
Hopefully they will try to clean the plane more thorough.

I am going next week for a conference- since its a flu- I am going to up my vitamin c and just wash my hands as much as humanly possible- it doesnt seem like wearing a mask will do too much.

They're saying it's at Disney...which means it will likely be a lot more places before too long. It's just too easy to catch.

As crazy as it may seem the reason young healthy people are being sickened and dying is from an overreaction in the body. The body with strong immune system is going to attack the virus and go into hyper mode which fills the lungs and the person can't breathe. Would almost make sense to wear yourself down and weaken your immune system before going someplace super public like Disney
ETA: I am sure Disney is going to extra lengths to clean if the virus is on their property. They are a business who need people not to be scared of spending money. When I was going down there in Jan when the super bad stomach virus was going around you would smell the disinfectant being used all over!

I don't wear a mask during regular flu season, so I see no reason to do so now. But you have to do what you think is right for you.

Has anyone in the US actually died from the swine flu? Last I heard, no one had died and only 1 or 2 people had to be hospitalized because of it in the US. Has this changed?

thats interesting- its usually the opposite with the regular flu- usually just targets older and very young or those with compromised immunity- thanks I will look into what you said before I start popping extra vitamin c.

its because we have seen the seasonal flu before. Your immune system can handle it. With the new flu since its a swine strain our immune systems dont have any memory of it so it goes into hyper mode.

There really isn't much that can be done, since once someone touches something and someone else touches it, that's how it spreads. Itw ill have spread before they can even attempt to disinfect. Plus, it would just be too many things to disinfect. That's why's it's up to US to wash our hands, don't touch our eyes or nose, not go out if we are sick, etc.
