Re: Why switch nipple size?
A lot of times the flow is to slow and the baby will get cranky because they cant drink enough. Luka is almost 9 months and on level 3 dr. browns. I guess if he isn't complaining then dont switch. I also noticed that he would leave about 2 oz of each of his bottles which is so not DS and after a few days thats when I made the switch

Re: Why switch nipple size?
I haven't switched yet either. I only use the size 2 nipples on the advent bottles since they come with the larger bottles. DD is a 8.5 months old
I don't see the reason too unless DC is struggling to get milk out.
From a marketing background-I totally think that nipple switching(labeling with age ranges) is just another marketing ploy to make mommies spend their hard earned money.

Re: Why switch nipple size?
So they can get more fluid and not have to s*ck so hard to get it. They will also finish the bottle much faster. When we went from level 1 to 2 and now to level 3 nipples its a big difference in time. Used to take 45 mins for a bottle with a level 1. Now that she is older and on a level 3, she'll finish a 7-8oz bottle in 10 mins.

Re: Why switch nipple size?
oh wow I dont feel so bad, Luciano's still on a sz 1 (avent) and he's 5m. I think he knows that I want him to stay a newborn
but seriously IVe tried the sz 2 a few times, and he gags and gets overwhelmed with the flow. Last week I even put a sz 2 by mistake, and I was like hey whats up with him, he was catching his breath and gagging over the bottle and sure enough it was a sz 2.
I want to switch him only because I want him prepared for putting cereal in the bottle (Yes, bad mommy here )

Re: Why switch nipple size?
Andrew finishes his bottles very fast now. I can't imagine how much faster he will finish it if I switch. Maybe I will try after he is feeling better.

Re: Why switch nipple size?
I changed Sydney to size 2 around 2 months old. She was starting to fall asleep during her bottle and it seemed like she was working so hard to get it out. If he seems fine, leave it.

Re: Why switch nipple size?
I didn't switch to 2's until he was older b/c I was BFing so I thought the smaller nipple size was better......I never went to 3s.

Re: Why switch nipple size?
Michael is such a heartly eater. I just switched him to size 4 Avent because he was literally sucking the size 3 nipple inwards! He did this with all the stages, as well as get frustrated. So switching worked great for us.

Re: Why switch nipple size?
DS would get frustrated b/c he wanted more quickly, it's so much nicer for him to finish the bottles so fast!

that was the same for us. I used 1s and 2s until 1 year when we started to make the switch to sippys

I JUST switched Kerri to a size 2....only because her bottles were taking along time for her to feed...it took her a little bit to get adjusted

I still use level 1's and Lauren is 8 months. SHe has no troubles fiinishing her bottles in any time, so I just never bothered to switch.

Re: Why switch nipple size?
Kaitee is on size 3 at 5 months old. I went from size 1 to size 2 when she was sucking the bottle so hard that when she let go the nipple got sucked into the bottle! (3 months old) I guess I waited to long. Then when she started to suck too hard again around 4 months I switched her and she never had a problem with them being to fast. I wouldn't have switched if it didn't bug her.

Re: Why switch nipple size?
When James was like 2 months old it was taking him a million years to finish a bottle and he was falling asleep. I switched to size 2 and it was much better. He's still on the size 2.

Re: Why switch nipple size?
I was told that you switch the nipple size when either (1) your baby is falling asleep when feeding and /or (2) taking a LONG time to finish a bottle..
We already moved Nikolas up to the fast flow nipples a few weeks ago now, and he's only 3 months old (these are using the Playtex Nurser Dropins..) because it was literally taking him an hour to finish a bottle with the slow flow nipples and he was getting very annoyed when feeing

Re: Why switch nipple size?
i switched olivia at 10.5 months to size 2 and 3s the 4's were too fast and she was gagging although if i give it to her at lunch and dinner she is fine. she didnt have a problem with the 1st but i figure if we are going to sippy cups soon we might as well get a faster flow.

Well...I fell for it! This weekend we needed to buy some new nipples. We bought size 3's based on the age on the package (avent bottles). She made the switch from 2 to 3's no problem...I don't even think she noticed.

Re: Why switch nipple size?
I just switched Jacob to size 2 (Dr Browns) and he is 3 months. He always fell asleep when drinking his bottle and it took forever. Now he seems to get it faster and he actually seems more satisfied!

Re: Why switch nipple size?
My son was on level 2 (avent) until we switched him to a sippy cup at 1.
He was always a fast drinker even with the level 2 so I did not feel the need to change it.
