Why We Should Move to Sweden, Estonia, Bulgaria, UK or Canada!
An example of generous parental leave is Sweden, where all working parents are entitled to 18 months' paid leave per child, the cost being shared between employer and State. To encourage greater paternal involvement in child-rearing, a minimum of 3 months out of the 18 is required to be used by the "minority" parent, in practice usually the father, and some Swedish political parties on the Left argue for legislation to oblige families to divide the 18 months equally between both parents.
Norway also has similarly generous leave.
In Estonia mothers are entitled to 18 months of paid leave, starting up to 70 days before due date. Fathers are entitled to paid leave starting from the third month after birth (paid leave is however available to only one parent at a time). The amount paid depends on wages earned during previous calendar year - most will receive 100% or full wage but there is an upper limit of three times national average.
The maternal-leave only system in Bulgaria is even more generous, providing mothers with 45 days 100% paid sick leave prior the due date, 2 years paid leave, and 1 additional year of unpaid leave. The employer is obliged to restore the mother to the same position upon return to work. In addition, pregnant women and single mothers cannot be fired.
In 2000, parental leave was greatly expanded in Canada from 10 weeks to 35 weeks divided between the two parents, which can be expanded to a year. In Canada parental leave is paid for by the Employment Insurance system.
In the UK, all female employees are entitled to 52 weeks of maternity leave, 39 weeks of which is paid, with the first six weeks paid at 90% of full pay and the remainder at a fixed rate.
All I get is a lousy $170/week for 6 or 8 weeks!

Really sad!! Here, they just take family time away...I couldn't believe when I heard that the governor of NJ is taking away the day after Thanksgiving from gov't employees...when they have gotten that day for decades. I wish family was valued more in the US, maybe there wouldn't be so many problems!!

True, but in some of those countries, you'd be paying through the nose if you wanted to see a good doctor.

But in many countries healthcare is free...

Thats true, I had 13 months maternity leave and waltzed back into my old role with an 18% pay rise.
The 39 weeks is actually only 33, thats counting the 6 weeks your employer pays 90% of your salary, ther remaining 33 weeks isy statuatory maternity pay, which is something like £112.75 (which is about $225) when I was on mat leave it was only 20 weeks...ah well. With my next baby....

Re: Why We Should Move to Sweden, Estonia, Bulgaria, UK or Canada!
Just a few things to clear up...
The healthcare isn't free, we pay 9% of our salary to the NHS. The income tax isn't 50%, in the UK we pay 23% up to £40K ($80K) and on anything above and beyond £40K, you are taxed 40%. The NHS is a fantastic system where you can see good doctors, there is a wait for things like hip operations, but in general, the system works well. The maternity care that I had when I had my baby in the UK was fantastic. I was offered a selection of birthing choices and I had fantastic midwife care during and after my birth. The NHS sends a midwife to your house for anything up to 28 days after you give birth, and following that they send Health Visitors who check up on your childs progress.
Thought I would elaborate.

My father in law moved to Bulgaria and he rented a 1100sq ft Flat, fully furnished, for $250 a month. But when he came down with cancer he came back here for better care.

Re: Why We Should Move to Sweden, Estonia, Bulgaria, UK or Canada!
Wow, I have distant relatives in Estonia--DH does in Sweden. We should definitely go live there!
I was reading recently that there is only one other developed nation that offers no paid maternity leave nationally, and that is Australia. BUT, they do offer up to a year off for the mother--unpaid, but nice to have the option.
We are so backwards in this country when it comes to this. I think many of our politicians talk about family and how important family is, but precious few try to do anything to create better work conditions for families. I think this is primarily because they don't want to upset businesses and potential campaign donors. Also may have something to do with our lousy Puritan work ethic.

Re: Why We Should Move to Sweden, Estonia, Bulgaria, UK or Canada!
in Canada you actually get 52 wks with how it works out...you start on pregnancy leave which you can start up to 8wks before the due date (im going off end of this week)(lasts for 17wks) and then you get the rest of your leave afterwards...so my employer has my back to work date set as Nov 5/08 you end up getting 55% of an average of the # of weeks you worked before you went off paid out bi-weekly by Employment Insurance
ETA: you dont pay to see any doctors here...referral from your family doc gets you in to see pretty much anyone, might take a bit, but you will get into see them all covered by OHIP and you can do your research and let your doc know who you want to go to.

Just to add - that's $225 weekly. And of course there are certain stipulations - like if you make less than that you're entitled to 90% of your salary instead.
I *think* that your child is automatically entitled to Child Benefit as well, which is a weekly payment of £18 ($36) up until the age of 16. But most people don't tend to claim it (is that right, Rachel?)

Oh yes, thats right. I forgot to mention that, I get £18 a week until Noah is 16, right now I spend that on diapers and clothes for the boy. It is a good deal.

Unfortunately, as is in most countries, no health care system is perfect. Its a post code lottery...you could live in one area and have fantastic NHS coverage, but live in another, perhaps more rural area and have terrible NHS coverage. Its just like anything else, its not perfect. (and no, I haven't seen sicko) I can only speak from my own experiences, I have had wonderful treatment on the NHS, I live in a major city...don't know if that has anything to do with it, but it might do.
