We used painters tape to figure out how and island would function in our kitchen and how big we could go with it. Easy to layout everything on the floor in tape and walk around to see how it will function

It depends a lot on the layout. Where doors or openings are, appliances, unless you can move them, etc. There are a lot of free room design websites/software out there so you could lay it out on the computer and see if it works.

Ideally I think you want at least 4 feet of space between the island and other fixtures - countertop, sink, stove, etc. Make sure it's not awkward to open diswahers, oven doors, etc. and to remove pans from the oven too.

NKBA recommends 42 inches for 1 coook and 48 for 2.
it really dpends on where you want to put the island. just figure you need to have 2' of cabinet, then 4' isle, then 2'-? island, then 4' isle then either 2' cabinet or wall.
14' might be fine, the 10' could be tight, it is really in how you lay it out, whether you want seating or not, and if/how the room open into another.
