Re: Will everyone South of Sunrise Highway need to Evacuate?
DH and i got home from dinner and got the automated message as well. We are a few blocks away from the south shore, a good distance south of Sunrise AND Merrick Road near Oceanside.
We have no plans to evacuate unless the County makes it mandatory. We have plenty of flashlights, candles, batteries, a small generator and food. I am not feaking out at all, we are prepared the best we can be and whatver happens, happens. The 50thousand LIF threads about LIFers going batsh-t crazy are kinda over the top, really. We will wait and see what the weather people will say tomorrow..
Until then, hope for the best!

I am in W Islip south of sunrise and didnt get the call either. I wonder if these areas do not have barrier islands like Fire Island to block the waves???

I don't think Suffolk is making calls yet, but I bet you are right - the storm really has to pound Fire Island before we can get anything too terrible, I think.

I'm thinking Nassau is a little more on the ball than Suffolk right now. Suffolk's evac website is down too.

I'm thinking the same thing, although my DH is against it, he wants to make sure the house is okay. I figure the only thing valuable in my house is my family.

Re: Will everyone South of Sunrise Highway need to Evacuate?
I remember hearing something many years ago that if LI ever got struck with a MAJOR hurricane, that the flood waters will reach Sunrise Highway.. I think they said a Category 4 hurricane would do that.. If you live in a flood prone area, I advise you put all of your belongings on a higher floor and evacuate. If you get a mandatory evacuation, evacuate. PD and FD aren't going to risk their lives to get to you if you stay behind on a mandatory evacuation...

The majority of north shore Suffolk will be fine. Very few north shore areas will even be affected if it's a cat 1 or 2
