with all this dog in store, dog in car talk: Opinions?

One thing I particularly HATE to see is dogs tethered up outside stores.... furthermore, RESTAURANTS.

no food, no water, dogs crying/barking, its too hot or too cold.

THIS i really do not understand.

if you know youre ging out to eat, why oh why would you bring your dog?

or to the grocery store? thats along shopping excursion, no? so why bring the dog?

Do you hate seeing this also???

Also, what do you do about it? I sometimes feel helpless.
If I am in the position to give the doggy water i do so.
I usually play with 99% of all tethered dogs i see, granted they are friendly. (and usually they are aching for attention)

do you call the police? talk to the manager at the store or restaurant???

lets discuss.

(i think most people wll be on the same page here, so HOPEFULLY this should not get heated)

If I can't bring my dog in with me then I leave her home!! I would NEVER leave her in the car or tie her up somewhere!! 1st of all she'd be scared to death and 2nd- I'd be petrified that she'd be stolen!! I would never forgive myself if anything happened to either of my babies!!

Re: with all this dog in store, dog in car talk: Opinions?

I hate to see it too, and I don't know why people feel the need to bring their pet along, just to leave it outside tied to something. I feel bad for the dog, and it's not safe. What if the dog gets loose somehow? What if someone steals it? What if some cruel person taunts it and it bites them? Just too many things can go wrong.

When I see it, I don't generally do anything about it though... I don't really know what to do in that situation.

It breaks my heart to see a dog tied up outside a store, restaurant, what have you.

My thoughts are, if you're going to a place where dogs are not welcome, don't bring your dog. Plain and simple.

It's sad, but there are A LOT of irresponsible pet owners out there.

I've gone in & out of stores hunting for the owners to give them a tongue lashing.

And I used to refuse to serve a customer at my bar for tying the dog to the post outside while he drank himself into oblivion.Chat Icon

i hear you. when someone says "oh my dogs in the car" i say "BRING HER IN!!!"

then i get asked "oh dogs are allowed in here?"

ummmm YES they are. (well, i guess legally they are not, but we allow it and invite it)

not only that.... if you know youre going to the bar, why oh why would you bring your dog (unless you are certain htey can come in)??

lastly, why are you driving to a bar if you plan on hanging for a long time?

ok im going of on a tangent..... dogs shouldnt be tethered!

I absolutely hate this!! People leave their dogs tied up all over the city and sometimes they look terrified. One time I was in Starbucks and a dog was tied up outside. She barked the entire time I was in there... turns out her owner was sitting at a table by the window with friends the ENTIRE time. Why bring the dog if you are meeting friends for a coffee??? So irresponsible Chat Icon

Re: with all this dog in store, dog in car talk: Opinions?

#1 reason dogs should not be tethered is theft. Tethered dogs should not be touched because the animal may be stressed. If you are aware of who the owner is, approach manager or owner of establishment and ask they speak with owner. If the animal is in distress and the owner has not responded to the concerns call 911 and animal control. Distress would be an obvious life threatening situation - weather related etc. While barking is obviously a sign the dog is stressed, it is not life threatening. The average person, although intentions are good, have provoked an attack by a tethered animal and many dogs find themselves in shelters as a result of being a Department of Health (bite) case. Many dogs may appear friendly and are not. Also, many are of the opinion small cute dogs are friendly, that is not always the case. Leave these matters up to experienced individuals in animal control or law enforcement.

I agree, however, the person bitten has the right and more than likely will file a report with the police and Veterinary Public Health Services as well as lawsuit. Most owners will not pay daily boarding fee to quarantine a dog which is long term, usually 6 months and panics when it becomes a police and health issue. In many cases relinquishes ownership of the dog. To avoid putting a dog in that position where it could be euthanized, I would not touch a dog that is not owned by me. I do not understand why individuals feel the need to pet a dog that is unknown to them.

One time I saw a beagle tied up outside a Stop and Shop. Doggie looked so old and sad, tied so close to the exit doors. Then I saw a big poop next to him, he pooped (probably was nervous). I wanted to go clean the poop up b/c I felt so bad he was trapped next to it. I attempted to go near him but the dog didn't look happy as I repeatedly tried to approach. So I had to leave it for my own safety but boy did that dog (trapped next to his poop and so close to the doors) break my heart.

I was driving down Broadway in Lower Manhattan and saw a man chasing pigeons, poor things were frantic flying overhead. He was a complete idiot chasing the pigeons in a circle, right outside City Hall. It was the weekend and the police detail were on the property not on sidewalk, sure they would have said something to him had they seen his bizarre behavior. He yelled out a profanity, I do hope it was because a pigeon dropped something on himChat Icon

Re: with all this dog in store, dog in car talk: Opinions?

Another reason a dog should not be tethered is it can become entangled in rope/cord which may lead to injury or death.

Ten years ago my organization adopted out a beautiful female pit bull to a local resident. The dog was named Sara. The adopters were very loving to Sara. Sara loved to jump high and this is often referred to as "leaping lizards". Well one day the owner went to Genovese in the neighborhood and decided to leave Sara outside in the yard but she put her on a long leash because Sara was a jumper. She arrived back home to find Sara dead, hanging over the other side of the fence, she had stangled herself. I was not informed of Sara's death until 3 months after the incident.

So sad... here the owner thinks they're doing the right thing, a good thing and in the end they contributed directly to their dog's death.

What a heart break.

Again, I'm BAFFLED as to why someone would do this. If people would just use their head and NOT bring their dog EVERYWHERE they went, these situations could be avoided.

I have no doubt the person who tied up their beagle outside the store didn't see anything wrong with what they did.

There are just too many irresponsible pet owners in this world and in the end it's the animal who suffers.
