we don't exchange with anyone besides ourselves
we are so lucky
my Dad doesn't accept gifts - for any occassion (but he sends them)
and I don't see my brother and sister (they go to there inlaws houses)- so we all just skip it
Jake and I have not exchanged in years- so I would rather just skip it this year- since we are planning on buying a house

My wife got me into starting Christmas shopping in like September and its great! The January credit card bill is no longer a scary sight!

don't go into michael's not only do they have out halloween stuff but christmas too  as for shopping i hate it so i wait till the last minute to po myself more

I already bought 1 gift, and as of right now DH is going to be away for the holidays (military) so I am not getting him anything.
I think I am going to start buying for my nieces and nephews now... Thanks for this post!

ITA- either way I have to spend money- whether it be now or then.
So why ruin my summer with thoughts of Christmas.
It's enough stress in Nov/Dec... no need to make the stress last even longer...

I'm actually going to start planning and shopping tomorrow.
First, budget.
Toy/gift list.
Then watching for sales. When I see a good deal, I'll buy now.
I hope to get it all done within the next month.
ETA: It's easier if I do it now before I go back to teaching.

me too...
but i have always been frugal around the holidays. i do not fall for the secularization and commercialization of Christmas. To me, Christmas is a religious holiday that I celebrate and I refuse to buy gifts for everyone and their mother.
DH and I do buy for each other, our parents, siblings, and niece and nephew and that's more than enough. I do bake or do something a little crafty for the people I work with. Unfortunately, most of my close friends are out of state, so if we have plans to get together, I will get a little something, but we don't have set plans to give to each other.
I enjoy the Christmas spirit, but the insanity of buying for everyone really drives me crazy. It's all about making money and all that, and i try not to buy into it. May sound corny to some, but I would rather go to Mass or give of my time to someone that really needs help - - that is Christmas to me.

I've been coming across some really great stuff lately through garage sales. Stuff that has never been opened/name brands, etc. Yesterday I picked up (from a Yankee Candle distributor) about $50.00 worth of candles for $10.00!!! Talk about Christmas savings!
I hate to seem like a cheap azz, but times are tough!

with  arriving and me being out of work things will be tight to begin with... i just want to spend time with everyone, i don't need a single gift!!

Same here. My sisters and I started doing a Kris Kringle with a set limit because we used to go crazy with each other. Last year we agreed no gifts. This year, I'll buy my nephew a present. I think that's it since little boy will be no more than 2 months old and I don't imagine I'll have time to shop.

I usually start buying things as I see them all year long but haven't bought anything this year yet. We also have a holiday account, infact 2 of them but one we use for vacation.
ETA:
We do a grab bag with my family as well as my inlaws family so it makes it much easier & then I just have the kids to get for.
