Woman falling thru the grate - my mom was always worried about that!
Growing up in manhattan, she would never walk over gratings or let me - she would always say that she was afraid we would fall thru - I always thought she was crazy and paranoid (well, she actually is, unfortunately...) but wow - she actually had something with that fear!!!

I just saw this on the news... CRAZY! I am always afraid of this happening.
ETA: They actually have it on video. It was scary...she was walking on the sidewalk and next thing you see is her going into the ground

Re: Woman falling thru the grate - my mom was always worried about that!
That has always been one of my BIGGEST fears. I NEVER walk on grates bc I am terrified of falling through. People always thought I was crazy, but now I feel justified!

I usually walk around them just so my shoes don't get caught in the groves...(the heel) but now I have another reason to avoid them

Re: Woman falling thru the grate - my mom was always worried about that!
A few years ago, actually about a week before DH proposed, we were in NYC heading towards the T-Salon. I was walking over a grate in front of one of the restaurants, and all of a sudden I was catapulted into the air, and fell on my elbow and broke it! The damn thing started to open, and no one was paying attention to see if anyone was walking by when they decided to open it.
The funniest part is Dh had planned a suprise trip to the Swiss Alps for 10 days of skiing, as part of the proposal - we were leaving in a week, and I didn't even know it. Thankfully, they took off my cast 2 days before we got on the plane! DH was a nervous wreck that whole week and I couldn't figure out why

You see my DH laughs at me when I walk around them. "why do you think you're gonna fall or something?" Well yes. You see it DOES happen. Crazy.

People have laughed at me for years b/c I never walk over them. I now have this story as proof.

It may be. My uncle who has worked for them for years had said these types of things would happen.

I try and scoot around the grate, but it's usually because I'm wearing heels... but YIKES!

Re: Woman falling thru the grate - my mom was always worried about that!
Freak accidents can happen pretty much anywhere. I mean in the 30+ years that I've been a NYC resident I've never heard of anyone falling through a grate till now. I'd say that's a pretty good record.
This also appears to be a privately operated grate (ConEd). It doesn't seem like a subway grating.
The only ones that I don't like walking over are those sidewalk basement entrances that many businesses have. Those things always seem unstable. Some already look like they're about to cave in! I'm sure not much maintenance goes into them.
