Woman sues preschool that her kid isn't getting preped for Harvard
I'm sorry, but you need to JUST get over yourslef.
I agree that the wealthy take this to a new level. I agree that we ALL want our kids to do the best they can and be the best they can. I really get that. But I have also seen the product of this. I have seen to many kids pushed beyond limits..having TOO much expected from them.
But, IMHO, this takes it to a new level....This is NO flame. It just seems these parents put way too much on a 4 year old. What happens if she cant get into Beardsley???

Suit Faults Test Preparation at PreschoolBy JENNY ANDERSON Published: March 14, 2011
A Manhattan woman has sued a $19,000-a-year preschool her daughter attended, arguing that the program failed to adequately prepare her daughter for the test required to enter New York City’s hypercompetitive private school system.
The suit, filed by Nicole Imprescia on Friday in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, said the York Avenue Preschool had not fulfilled its stated commitment to prepare her 4-year-old daughter, Lucia, for the intelligence test known as the E.R.B.
“The school proved to be not a school at all, but just one big playroom,” the suit claimed.
Many preschools boast that they can prepare students for the test, helping them score high enough to catch the attention of elite private schools. The preschools have become a component of a mini-industry that also includes costly consultants and test preparation materials.
York Avenue’s president, Michael Branciforte, declined to comment on Monday. The school’s lawyer, William Wachtel, said that the curriculum “is designed to help students on their E.R.B.”
The suit charges that preschool education is critical to a child’s success in life, quoting from various news articles. “It is no secret that getting a child into the Ivy League starts in nursery school,” says one. “Studies have shown entry into a good nursery school guarantees more income than entry into an average school,” says another.
Ms. Imprescia enrolled her daughter at York in 2009, when she was 3, but took her out one month into her second year when, rather than preparing for the E.R.B., her daughter was “dumped” into a class with 2-year-old children, talking about shapes and colors, according to the lawsuit. The suit said the school refused Ms. Imprescia’s demand to return that year’s tuition. It did not say whether Lucia had taken the test.
The complaint, reported on the Web site of The New York Post on Monday, said Ms. Imprescia was seeking “exemplary damages, costs and attorney’s fees” but did not specify an amount.

After doing some research, I see that the ERB is a a test given to 4 year olds that want to apply to private kindergarden/school.
Short but interesting blog on the subject.

All this testing mania is out of control. It's taking over the public schools too. And it's sad, we spend so much time doing this and we reduce our kids to numbers.

Maybe she should take into consideration her own child ability. A school can only go so far. Some people are genius, some are not. No matter what school you are attending.

It all depends on what she was promised. If she was promised a curriculum that preps for tests & it was delivered, I'd say she has a point.
If the currriculum was delivered & her 4 year old daughter didn't a absorb it's a different story.
I think the news headlines are distorting the actual story.

Re: Woman sues preschool that her kid isn't getting preped for Harvard
At first glance, this suit seems utterly ridicilious.
The ONLY way I could possibly see her getting anything, is if she can convince a judge that they are defrauding parents by not providing the environment that was promised with the initial contract.
But I do think this mother is stretching it pretty far with the claims that her child could possibly lose out on an ivy league education.
I also noticed they say the preschool is $19K a year. Divided into 12 mos, that's only $1583 a month. Considering the price of regular daycare that I see posted on these boards...that amount for some upper crust preschool in Manhattan actually sounds pretty low & reasonable.

ITA.
Those tests are quite a big deal if you want your child to get into a certain NYC public school program (my old boss had extensive training for her kids when they were taking the test).

On the surface it's completely ridiculous. But if the school was contractually obligated to provide a certain environment and didn't deliver, then I guess it's the parent's right to sue.

Re: Woman sues preschool that her kid isn't getting preped for Harvard
I really just want to at this whole situation.
If the parent paid for a "service" that she didn't get, then I guess there is something to that. Still, I think the pressure placed on a small child to begin private school/Ivy League school prep is out of hand.
However, I think the article is a bit vague...maybe she was placed with two year olds due to a cut off date or because she was having trouble with this rigorous preschool curriculum.

A 4 year old talking about shapes and colors?! I'm appalled! You know, at first this does sound ridiculous, but really, 4 yr olds don't learn this stuff. They do this before the age of 2 in most daycares. Cailen will be 4 next month, and he is learning to read and write! They also work on math, science, and cooking. He learns such advanced things in his daycare, I am floored....
His curriculum so far has been about: Weather Transportation Dinosaurs Community
...Things like that.
I would be annoyed too if that's the typical curriculum for a 4 yr old and instead they worked on shapes and colors.... I'm not saying I'm expecting a curriculum to prepare him for Harvard, but a child in a setting that is educational should be provided with material that is stimulating and appropriate for his/her developmental and age level.

That wouldn't make sense - if there was a cut off date issue, then she would maybe be with 3 yr olds - not kids 2 yrs younger than her...
And if she couldn't keep up with the curriculum, it is unethical to place her in a developmentally inappropriate class. The parents would need to be told about this, there would need to be a discussion about her difficulties and a plan would be put in place. Not decide on their own to put her in a class with kids 2 years younger than her.
Plan, meaning, they either work with the mom to get her ready for Harvard, or plan for her to leave...

I agree. I find that when I read actual court documents, not many cases are exactly what the papers portray.
