Women's Rights Advocates Back Obama, Oppose Palin
Take it as you will, I find it telling when women rights groups believe a man would do more for us than a woman.
----------
WASHINGTON, Sep 17 (OneWorld) - Several women's advocacy groups have publicly declared their support for Barack Obama and Joseph Biden in the U.S. presidential election, citing the senators' support for issues of particular importance to women and expectations that they will keep their promises to promote women's rights if elected.
ADVERTISEMENT "Although it is very unusual for us to endorse in a presidential election, this is an unprecedented candidate and an unprecedented time for our country," said Kim Gandy, president of the political action committee of the National Organization for Women (NOW), the United States' oldest and largest women's rights organization.
Gandy joined representatives from the Feminist Majority, the Business and Professional Women Foundation, the National Association of Social Workers, the National Congress of Black Women, and the Women's Information Network to make the announcement Tuesday.
As senators, Obama and Biden's voting records have received a 100-percent rating on women's rights issues, according to the Feminist Majority.
The groups cited key women's issues that Obama has recognized and McCain has opposed, presenting a stark list of yes's for the Obama-Biden ticket and consistent no's for McCain.
Obama is a co-sponsor of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act, an act to end wage discrimination against women. He is also a co-sponsor of the Prevention First Act, aimed to strengthen access to contraception and reproductive health care, and prevent unwanted pregnancies.
The groups also cited Obama's support for the continued reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, of which Biden is the chief sponsor, as well as the Security and Financial Empowerment Act, which would provide legal, medical, and financial support to victims of domestic violence, according to Gandy.?
The groups also praised Biden's long-time record of supporting women's rights issues over more than three decades in the U.S. Senate. ?
The Business and Professional Women Foundation aligned itself with Obama in large part because of his initiative to improve health care for veterans and defend the G.I. Education Bill, according to Deborah L. Frett, CEO of the Foundation.?
Betsy Clark, executive director of the National Association of Social Workers, said Obama is an ally to social workers -- more than 80 percent of whom are women -- and is committed to serving children and families.?
The groups were not impressed by the potential to elect a woman to the vice-president position, despite the sudden surge of interest created by Sarah Palin, McCain's running mate. ?
"John McCain just doesn't get it," said Eleanor Smeal, president of the Feminist Majority and a long-time leader in the women's rights movement. "Sarah Palin is no Hillary Clinton. You can't attract Hillary voters and women voters with a woman opposed to what Hillary stands for."
Added Dr. E. Faye Williams, national chair of the National Congress of Black Women: "When we elect a woman as vice-president, we want one who wins on honesty, and on a campaign that represents issues that make the lives of all women better. Sure, we often support women in campaigns, but not a woman who runs on deception and distortions and against the best interests of progress for women."

I find it refreshing, but not the slightest bit surprised. I'm glad their agenda is women's rights versus getting a woman in office.

I don't agree with them, but I don't find it surprising. Women's rights is about women's equality, not women's superiority. I don't think people should vote for McCain because Palin is a woman anymore than they should vote for Obama because he is black. I think equal rights is about a level playing field and not about getting special consideration for being a minority.
I realize every group can endorse whoever they want... however, endorsements honestly don't mean anything to me. I don't base my vote on them. In fact, I generally complete disregard them. (That's just an aside - not a comment or assumption about anyone posting on this thread. It's also not a dismissal of the topic. I actually DO find this thread very interesting and worthy of discussion!)

The only thing I'm suprised at is the admission by NOW that they rarely endorse a Presidential candidate - Say What?
I've been a member of NOW for 17 years - they've been endorsing candidates for as long as I've been sending them checks.

ITA. It doesn't surprise me that they are for Obama. Probably some of the same reasons I am not a fan of Palin, but the big one is surely that she is against a woman's right to choose. She also charged rape victims for rape kits in Alaska--pretty horrendous for anyone, man or woman to do this IMO.
I am glad that they didn"t endorse the McCain ticket just because he put a woman there. As much as I would love to see a woman as VP or Pres, she is not it.

I would love to see a woman in office, but the right woman and in my opinion Palin is not it.

Totally not surprised - i don't know many if any women organizations that back a republican candidate - mostly based on the abortion issue.

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but who pays for them in NY? Is it a taxpayer program? I always assumed that it would be charged to your insurance company if you have coverage and otherwise picked up by the gov't.

Re: Women's Rights Advocates Back Obama, Oppose Palin
the only people this should effect are those that blindly wanted a woman.
stuff like this means nothing to me. Jesus could come down and endorse a candidate and it wouldn't sway my vote. (unless he gave that candidate the power to mulitply loaves, fish and wine and made sure they used to to feed the poor and not their big fat friends )

Re: Women's Rights Advocates Back Obama, Oppose Palin
That's because it has nothing to do with supporting "women," it is about supporting "liberal women." NOW said it themselves that they do not believe Palin is a woman, she is really a conservative man, therefore she doesn't count.

Re: Women's Rights Advocates Back Obama, Oppose Palin
I wouldn't say NOW necessarily supports "liberal" women only. They support causes important to women everywhere though and found Palin wanting in this area. I heard a bit of an interview with a NOW spokesperson on NPR yesterday and she said they felt Obama has the interests of most American women at heart. Palin, it was felt, is out of step with the majority of American women.
Not saying the spokesperson is right or wrong, just sharing what was said.
