Re: wood banister/railing
we did. I guess it depends on the wood you want. It seems that you don't have that much to do, so it would be a lot cheaper, maybe then what I spent. I believe ours was between $1,500-$2,000. We had a lot of stuff done at the same time so I don't completely remember the price.
these are the best pics I could find.

Re: wood banister/railing
I'd be interested in knowing how much this costs as well... and if anyone just bought the supplies and put it together themselves? We're thinking of doing this but have no idea what the cost would be if we did it DIY vs. hiring someone.

Thank you!
Sorry, but I can't recommend my contractor. We didn't like him and I wouldn't want to recommend him to someone else. GL!

Re: wood banister/railing
I came across this. It's from 2006, but maybe you could call around to some of these companies and get prices.

Someone I work with did a three foot section of railing - took him HOURS. And he's very handy with things like that. You have to get the angle just right. Just thought I'd let you know apparently it's not as easy as it looks.

Re: wood banister/railing
We just had our banister done. We have a high ranch so it is about 20 ft of banister. We purchased all the supplies and our friend helped DH install it. We have three oak- box newels with oak railing and about 80 iron balusters & it cost us about $1200 for the supplies. If you just do oak it would probably be half the price. We also saved a lot of money by having our friend help. ours looks similar to this before stain.. I will try and post pictures of ours as soon as we stain it.

Re: wood banister/railing
We did as well. We used Bill Elliott (516) 236-4158, and were very happy with him. Other LIF'ers have used him and have been happy as well.
We did basically what you did and replaced the main bannister and the upper portion. We opted to have 2 separate pieces so that we could unscrew the top portion if needed to make moving furniture easier.
