wood fireplace install
Has anyone had a wood fireplace installed in their home?
How much was it to install?
Did you have a brick chimney installed outside or just a vent?
Did you see a big savings in your heating bill when you used it?
Who did you use to install it and how were they?
Thanks!

Re: wood fireplace install
Hi there.
please contact this company, Flue Tech Inc
they came up to our house this past weekend to discuss re-opening our existing (but closed) fireplaces.
after hearing a quote that made me cry an hour before from another company, this guy came in and was THOROUGH and knowledgable.
the estimate is free and they will give you a range of choices.
our fireplaces are originally wood burning, but we will probably be opting for a wood stove insert instead b/c that is more energy efficient. a regular wood fireplace sends 80% of the heat out the chimney with it.
as for the chimney itself, ours was capped off in the attic, so they told us we have a choice...extend the chimeny out with brick ($$$$$) or extend a metal vent out (less $$$$, but we have to debate b/c our house is old and I don't want it to look dumb)
anyway, definitely give them a call. they are located in Jericho, but go all over (our house is in Orange County and they came up there).
good luck!!!!!
PS they are coming back in a few weeks to do some demolition on it first. apparently, when they closed and capped off the fireplaces, they simply allowed the 7 or so feet of brick and debris fall into the flue instead of cleaning it out...so there is decades work of junk in there now.
i'll give an update on that part of the job when they do it.
