wording for sympathy card..
Im writing a sympathy card to my cousins. they are 18/19 and just lost their grandpa...
do I write
"you were blessed to have had" such a wonderful nonno or you ARE blessed to have sucha wonderful nonno
sometimes it seems to hard to make it past tense so fast, does that make sense?
so blessed you ARE or WERE
and HAVE
or HAVE HAD...
not sure which more gentle for lack of a better word...
sorry if this makes little sense, its so late.

i agree. expressing it in the present tense may just make them more sad.

Re: wording for sympathy card..
If you say "blessed to HAVE".....well it sounds strange to me because they no longer HAVE him in that sense.
You could say something like....."You are blessed to have had such a wonderful Nonno. Treasure all your memories of him & he will live on in you hearts"

****** This card comes with many heartfelt hugs and kisses… I’m sure you both know how blessed you are to have had such an amazing nonno as a source of strength, inspiration, and guidance in your lives.
******
and Im going to tell them how close Iw as to my nonno and share with them a poem I wrote to him many years ago.

Re: wording for sympathy card..
well since you guys are up so late responding to my sappy sad post
here's what I wrote
now grandparents are a very sensitive spot for me, because my maternal grandparents were such an amazing part of my life...
*********
Dear ___ and ____,
This card comes with many heartfelt hugs and kisses… I’m sure you both know how blessed you are to have had such an amazing nonno as a source of strength, inspiration, and guidance in your lives.
My nonno will always be one of the most influential role models in my life. He became one of my angels when I was only 11 ½, but I still speak of him very often, and always remember the happy, fun times we shared. I keep him very much alive in my heart and he will never fade from the forefront of my memories.
Your nonno is watching over you today and will be guiding you for the rest of your lives. Don’t be afraid to speak to him, write him letters, poems, anything your heart desires.
I will always remember your nonno Domenico as an amazing, loving, caring and wonderful man who completely adored his grandchildren. His eyes lit up when these two beautiful little girls bounced around the room.
I wanted to share with you a poem that I wrote to my nonno many years ago. It may bring a laugh, a smile, or a tear, but please know that it comes with my deepest sympathy, from one granddaughter to another. Hopefully it inspires you in some way…
You both have a special bond with your nonno that you will cherish forever. Never be afraid to express it. This is the bittersweet beginning of reliving the wonderful memories, telling the funny stories, and keeping him with you in your hearts for a lifetime.
*******
doyou want to hear the poem too ??

Re: wording for sympathy card..
here's the poem.
I wrote it one summer that we were in Italy (we went almost every summer).. and it was 4 years after he had passed.. I was 16...
**********
NONNO
As I came into this world on that sunny August morning The waiting room was filled with hope that the news wouldnt be a warning This one large man stood out from the crowd as he shouted, gosh, so loud "Be careful doctors, take it slow, this is their grandpa here...and proud" This man was always near us as we cried our first few tears. He made us happy, brought us joy, as the months turned into years. "Nonno" this, and "Nonno" that, was all we began to say. He listened and spoke back to us, and we always got our way. "I want ice cream, I want toys" "Dolls for girls and trucks for boys" The word N-O he could never say, It would give this man such pain. Money, he had, and these four little jewels drove the man insane God Bless you Nonno, you were the best Since you've been gone, I've changed. You closed the bright light in my world, and my life is rearranged. Being in your house without you here, makes it even worse. Everything here reminds me of you, and I think "Why couldn’t I go first ?" Seeing my loved ones being taken away has been an infinite disaster. But when your turn came...it was not the same... I was like a puppy...without a master. Seeing your tombstone gets me depressed. I wish I could kiss your face. It's now four years and it seems like twenty 'Cuz I'm living at a slower pace.. You'll always have a place in my heart and your smile before my eyes. I miss you so much, words cant say, But I've got to realize... Just how ugly the truth can be That Nonno is gone forever... When it crosses my mind, "I'll never see him again", I get angrier more than ever.. I would like to end this here, because I told you how I feel If I could turn back time, grandpa, today you would be real. Hugs and kisses, coming straight from the heart... From one of your daughter's twins... The one who saw, that in the game of life, The loser always wins.
TI AMO *********

Re: wording for sympathy card..
"are" -- It not only seems more appropriate, it's also the grammatically correct choice.
