What town do you live in? We currently live in NJ but DH may have a job opportunity in NYC. I'm thinking it may be an option to move since we are constantly traveling to LI to visit family.

If you don't mind sharing what town and how long your commute is.
Thanks!

Bellmore. Used to take me an hour and a half minimum to get to the UES. DH gets a 5:40 train (if it's not cancelled) and gets home about 6:50.

Unless you live in the train station and work next to Penn the duration of the train ride is irrelevant. You need to tack on time to drive to the station, park and then get to your office once you're get to Penn.

I've heard the commute from NJ to the city is no picnic, either, though so you may just have to pick your poison!

douglaston, Queens 28-31 minutes to penn. 5-10 min delay MAYBE twice a year.

Look into the port washington line ( the best! )

Bellerose village and floral park are also wonderful communities with easy train access to Penn. That line is also reliable.

I would stick with western Nassau if you're looking for a shorter commute. My Dh used to live in Lynbrook and his commute to penn was about 35 min. Now we are a little further east and takes him about 55 min

Don't move to the Ronkonkoma area- it's almost an hour and a half one way if you don't get an express and the line is CONSTANTLY having issues!

It's the worst! I only do it occasionally & it's the train ride that never ends! I don't know how my friends dad did it everyday for like 20 years!

I agree. It sucks. I did it for 16 years. About 1 hour 20 minutes and then the subway down to wall street. 2.5 hours door to door each way. 5:29 am in the morning and the 7:14 on the way home. I was crazy.

Now I get pissed at my husband when he goes in one day a week and leaves at 8 and is home by 6 and complains. He has no idea!!

OMG you are a hero! That is a CRAZY schedule to do for 16 years!
I do it twice a month and I only have to go upstairs to 1 Penn Plaza for my office- no subway or walking- and I can't handle it.
I can't imagine doing it daily and going all the way downtown too!

Work in NYC but live on LI?

I am in Farmingdale. 55 mins. I then have 2 subways to midtown and DH takes a train to Atlantic terminal and then hops a subway downtown.

I don't mind it at all.

we live by the nassau blvd train station and it's like 30-35mins. I would add Garden City, Garden City South, Franklin Square, New Hyde Park, and Floral Park to your list. They are all western nassau county, close to the queens border. These LI towns are the closest to the city and have good schools

Re: Work in NYC but live on LI?

I think someone mentioned this above but keep in mind that commuting time is not just the length of the train ride. Door to door can add another 30-45 minutes to your day depending on how far you live from the station, what the parking situation is like, and how you travel to your office once you are in NYC.

Also, go on the LIRR website and look at the actual times. I have co workers that live in Western Nassau and it takes them almost as long as me due to the trains they can get. So just being in Nassau doesn't automatically mean its a quicker ride.

Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, Valley Stream are all under 40 minutes. Oceanside varies between 38 and 42. The Long Beach line is pretty dependable unless of course, there is a hurricane. The thing is during rush hour EVERYTHING takes longer. Probably best to be on a line that doesn't pass through Jamaica, like some of the North Shore lines.

Re: Work in NYC but live on LI?

I live in Lynbrook and it take anywhere from 30-45 minutes to Grand Central and that includes my subway ride from the LIRR to work. I generally take the LIRR into Hunterspoint or Woodside and take the 7 train right into Grand Central. Driving into Queens is the same- anywhere from 25 minutes (on a Saturday) to 45 minutes at rush hour. I love our town though. We've only been there a year- lived in Queens before that so it's very different but I really like it there.

ETA: We're a 10 minute walk to LIRR in Lynbrook. That was a must have for me.

Port Washington
36 min express train during peak

Door to door for me is an hour and 15 mins b/c I take 2 subways from Penn to get to my office (or walk 25 min).

When considering this town keep in mind you can't get a parking spot at the train station after 7:30AM.

We're in Islip. It takes DH about an hour and 20 on the train one way, plus his walk to midtown.
