Re: Work related question - quality of life or money?
I opt for quality of life as well!
Right now, I make decent money, get lots of vacation, get treated well and work good hours. I could find a job where I'd make more but, I'd have to sacrifice the other things. I really enjoy having my time and not being overwhelmed all the time at work. I also really enjoy my job!

Re: Work related question - quality of life or money?
I've learned that life is too short to be miserable in my job. I would take less money to be happier. Money isn't everything.

Re: Work related question - quality of life or money?
Quality of life! I don't care how much money I have to lose, nothing is worth my sanity. Money doesn't buy you everything in life. PLus I already have my husband, so I think I'm pretty set for life.

Re: Work related question - quality of life or money?
I work in a great place...with an awesome work/life balance. I do make a little less than I would if I worked for a large public company. Honestly...the trade off is not a question...I come in at 9-9:30 out the door at 5pm 97% of the time...and have a great boss...definitely worth 10-15k a year in my opinion.

Hands down, better quality of life. Life is too short and there is only so much stress your body can take.

Re: Work related question - quality of life or money?
Quality of life is the number one thing for me. I had a job where I was making really tons of $$$$$ but it was awful. I worked ALL THE TIME for two long years. Finally, I quit. Never regretted it for a second. I have friends that still work there or at similar firms and are still complaining that their life is miserable but the $$$$ was just more important to them. For me, you only have one life to live...I'd rather have less and be able to enjoy my life

Re: Work related question - quality of life or money?
Like others have said before, if you can pay the bills, quality of life should be most important.
I left my job to become a full-time phd student and it's the best decision I've ever made in my life. This all happened right before we got married so we opted to buy a co-op instead of a house. Luckily, I have a great DH who will support me no matter what as long as we have a roof over our heads!

Re: Work related question - quality of life or money?
My happiness would be more important. I would feel less stressed, more healthy, so the money is not as important as my health.

Re: Work related question - quality of life or money?
What good is money if you can't enjoy it or enjoy your life? I would take a job that would give you the uality of life you desire. When it comes down to it, you can't take it with you, and as far as I know, you only have one shot at life...don't waste it being miserable.

as long as I could pay my bills with the less money I would take it
I agree - I value quality of life and need to enjoy my job in order to be happy but if the job with better quality would leave me drowning I would obviously have to evaluate my options

If I was offered a job with the perfect hours, a little less money, but the job was ideal and would be great for me, I'd take it in a second !

Re: Work related question - quality of life or money?
I have this discussion with coworkers all the time. They want me to work on the regional team which is based on Manhattan. The problem is the money isn't good enough for me to make the commute in and work the crazy hours that they all work. To me, money does nothing if there is no time to spend it. It's all about quality of life.

If it was just a little less money- i would take the better quality of life in a heartbeat.
Ditto. It might be a question if it was a huge paycut but for just a little less money I'd give notice.

Let me ask you all a question -
If you have a job that you are semi-happy in, and make great money, but you hate the hours that you work and you are starting to dislike what your job has become -
and you are offered a job with the perfect hours, a little less money, but the job is ideal and would be great for you...
Would you change your job if you thought you would be happier but make less money? Your quality of life would be much better though.
Your thoughts?
This very scenario presented itself to me in 2003. I choose quality of life and it was worth it! I couldn't have been happier and not once did I look back and second guess my decision.

Re: Work related question - quality of life or money?
I personally went through this a few years ago. I absolutely hated the district I worked in, and I left to work in my current district. I took an 8k/year paycut, but by far, I'm SO much happier. It was one of the best decisions that I've ever made (job-wise).
So for me, it's quality of life all the way...

Re: Work related question - quality of life or money?
Definately quality of life. I am thinking of quitting my second job because I am working way too much and am miserable there. When you are always miserable at work life is just not good. Go for the quality of life job!!

Re: Work related question - quality of life or money?
I would make sure that I understood what I really wanted, sometimes people think they really want to work less and have less responsibility when really all bthey are is burnt out and need a break. If you are truly ready for a change and can live with less money and think you have the perfect situation go for it. I have found though people tend to think the grass is always greener and they sometimes take pay cuts and then regret it as they think they are working for too little, even with a better quality of life but there are some that find there jobs rewarding and don't care about the money, it's such a personal decision.
