Working moms - can you help me figure out my hours?

I don't know what to do.

Ok, so at my job, I have to work an 8.5 hour day (one hour lunch break included in there). I can start my day at anytime I want, and leave 8.5 hours later.

OR, I can work an extra hour a day, and take a day off every two weeks.

OR, I can work TWO extra hours a day, and take a day off every week.

AND, I can work from home 1-2 days a week.

Before I had Yael, I was working 6:30-4pm, and taking a day off every other week.

So far this week, I've been doing 7:30-4pm. My commute is only a half hour so it isn't so bad, but I'm usually out of the house even before Alex wakes up, so I'm thinking, maybe I should do 8:30-5, so I can see more of the girls before work. Or, maybe I should do 7:30-5pm, so I can take a day off with them every other week?

I just can't decide.... if you were me, what hours would you pick?

If it was me I'd rather start work earlier so I have more time in the evening with the kids. Mason goes to sleep at 7:30 and I get home from work with him at 5:15PM. I only have 2 hours b4 I put him to sleep.

Oh, and if I had a chance to have a day off every other week so I have a three day weekend with Mason I'd do it. Can you work through lunch?

Well, I have the same schedule. What I would do is work 7:30 to 5 and get a full day off every other week.

Right now I work 7-4:30, but I am putting in OT. What I plan to do after the baby is work the credit instead and have those days off for doctor's visits, visiting family OR hopefully more often, fun outings!

I would definitely pick to have the full days off though because I know myself and after work I am kind of shot so I would love to have more full days to have more energy and be able to really play with the baby.

No, unfortunately they won't allow you to work through lunch and leave even earlier. Grrrrrrr....

I really DO love those days off - I used to take them all the time with Alex. And on the long weeks, where I don't have a day off, I would just work from home one day that week, and keep Alex home with me, so it would feel like a day off every week essentially. But the drawback is it means one less hour a day with the girls...

Nope. Not allowed to shorten my lunch to shorten my day. We are required to take an hour lunch break, during the day.

Re: Working moms - can you help me figure out my hours?

I'd go in earlier so that I could have a day off every other week, definitely! Esp. if it works with your childcare situation, etc. I know it does stink to not see them before you leave, but think of the fun things you can do on your day off Chat Icon

ETA: Do you get to see them for a good chunk of time in the evening? If you get to see them for a few hours each night, then it sounds like a great situation (above).

I do 7-3 during the summer and though it's hard starting that early, I love having the time home in the afternoon. I'd start early, do an hour extra a day, and do one day off every 2 weeks. And work from home 2 days a week.

Yeah, I do. If I leave at 5pm, I'm at their school by 5:30, and they don't go to sleep until 8:30/9pm, so even with that extended hour during the workday, I still get to see them 3+ hours at the end of the day.

Nice-- this does sound like the way I'd go then--it would be awesome to have the day off every 2 weeks (would you keep them out of school that day?).

That flexibility is amazing! If your commute is only half an hour, I would actually probably do 6:30-5pm and get a day off with them every week instead of every other. The way I see it is if you're not seeing them in the morning anyway, why not go in even earlier and enjoy a full day with them once a week? I'd love that.

Not sure if your little one is STTN yet, but that will obviously play a factor in this being realistic... If she's not, I'd do 7:30-5pm Chat Icon

Re: Working moms - can you help me figure out my hours?

If you don't mind going to work early like you did before, I would go earlier.

The commute you have is not based on 8:30am, right? It might be longer if you start at 8:30am. That's rush time!

If you could work 2 hours additional everyday to get a day off everyday AND be able to work from home 1-2 days per day, that's what I would do.

By going earlier you probably would have time in the evening for the girls. I am a SAHM during the week, but when I work on weekend I find that I am more interactive with DS after I come back from work. In the morning I am getting ready for work and mostly only interact with DS for his breakfast and get him ready for the day.

A 3 day weekend every week is GOOD! You could do so much with the girls on Fridays or whatever day you have off.

Re: Working moms - can you help me figure out my hours?

How much vacation/sick time do you get? If you get a lot, I would continue with 7:30-4, work from home when you can and then use a vacation day here and there during the month. If you don't get a lot of vacation time i'd do 7:30-5 and take that day off every other week.

Absolutely! Before Yael was born, that's what I was doing with Alex, and continued during my maternity leave.

Every other Friday was a "fun" day for her and me. I'd schedule a playdate with her best friend, or take her somewhere fun, like the aquarium, zoo, museum, or up to LI for a long weekend with friends or Grandma.

My ideal situation would be to be home at least one day a week- or once every other week, but also see my kids in the morning and at night

Yael is STTN - but, I wake her up at 5:30am to feed her and play a little, and then put her back to sleep at 6:45am, so that it makes it a little easier on DH to get them both out the door and to school in the morning. I don't know if I'd be able to do that if I had to get out of the house by 6am to get to work by 6:30am. I've definitely thought about doing that schedule, but it would mean 'd have to wake up at 4:30am, to feed and change Yael, and get myself ready and out the door by 6am, which I don't know if I can handle.

Re: Working moms - can you help me figure out my hours?

This is what I did when I worked f/t:
Our regular hours were 8:30-5. We had the same option with the extra hours and days off. I worked 7:00am - 5:30 pm M-Tu-Th-Fr. I had off Wed every week. In addition, I worked from home 1 day a week. It worked for us. True on the days I went in at 7 I didn't see Landon in the morning, but if I went in at 7:30 or 8 I wouldn't either. I liked to get the majority of extra hours done in the morning. I only worked 4 miles from home though, 8-10 minute drive.

Thats the way I would go. A four day work week will be very helpful as they get older and are involved in various activities.

Re: Working moms - can you help me figure out my hours?

I don't know... I really don't know - I'm so muddled and confused.

Thank you for the feedback ladies. I *think* I will try the 7:30-5pm tour, and work from home 1-2 times a week, and take a day off every other week.

When Alex goes to kindergarten, maybe I'll bump it to 6:30-3pm, so I can be with her after school everyday.

Decisions... decisions...

I would start earlier and get home sooner.

I'd rather spend a couple hours working while she is sleeping, so my afternoon was longer with her.

I leave the house at 5am, so 1/2 my day is done while she is sleeping.

I love the flexibility you have!

If it were me, I'd opt for going to work before the girls were up in order to have the extra hour at the end of the day and a day off every other week. I'd go back to the 6:30-4 but I wouldn't get up earlier in order to feed the baby and play with her. I'd just get out the door and then be able to relax with them later.

Re: Working moms - can you help me figure out my hours?

I would opt for the day off every other week. The evenings are all about getting stuff done, dinner, bath time, bed time etc etc so having an hour less really will not make a huge difference i think....and having your kids look forward to one full day off with you when you can actually get something done will be priceless.

Good luck with the juggle - it cannot be easy - I am so grateful to be able to work from home full time even if it drives me nuts some days.

I had a similar option when I returned to work after having DS#2. I would do 7:30 to 5 and be home an extra day every other week. Chat Icon
