Working moms who DON'T use daycare

Do you have a back up plan in case your caregiver is sick?

My mom had the flu and couldn't watch the kids from Tues through Fri this past week... luckily my job is flexible in that I can keep them home with me until DH gets home at 2:30 and then do my work from home/in the field, but I don't know what I would have done if I couldn't do that.

Do you just take sick days from your job or do you have another babysitter?

My FIL watches DS three days a week, my DH has off Wed and Thurs. My dad and SIL also watch him when needed. I'm pretty lucky, I haven't had to take a day off yet. But if we had too we would probably take turns taking off.

Re: Working moms who DON'T use daycare

I only work p/t but my sister babysits for me 2 of the 3 days. She has 3 kids of her own, so if one of kids, or her, or my bil is sick, then i dont have someone. So i have to call into work sick also. Stinks but what can i do.

I have a nanny 3 days and my parents 2 days .. so they're each a back up on the other days. My nanny has yet to be sick and my parents are going away in a couple of weeks and I asked the nanny far in advance to watch DD on those 2 days. Also, my DH could take off from work more easily than I, so he would take off if need be.

Re: Working moms who DON'T use daycare

JT is her caregiver during the day and if he is sick, my mom takes care of Ava, or that's the plan. We haven't had to do that yet.

Yes, I have a nanny but DS is registered with emergency daycare through my job, in addition to us being able to work from home or have my mom or brother step in for emergencies.

Re: Working moms who DON'T use daycare

I don't really have a backup plan. My sitter (cousin) needs a week off in March, i am hoping my mom from upstate NY can come stay with me for the week, but not sure. Otherwise, I take off,Dh will take a day, and my MIL will take a couple of vacation days to help. Fri. my ccousin, and her son was sick, but the office was slow, so I brought him to work with me, it worked out okay, but not something I could do all the time.

Re: Working moms who DON'T use daycare

ds is with my mil two days a weeks. One of my SIL's happens to be unemployed right now so she is my backup. If not then one of us has to stay home from work (most likely me). There are places (daycares) that do offer backup daycare. At least there is one near me in Jersey. Ask around and maybe you can find one just in case. I don't really know specifics about it though.

Re: Working moms who DON'T use daycare

DD is with my mom two mornings, my dad two mornings and with both of them one afternoon. If Dad was sick, mom and work together as ESL teachers, so we would combine our classes and one of us would teach it. If Mom is sick, Dad would step in. If they are both sick, most likely I would be sick too (I spend a lot of time there since they watch DD) so I would just be home.

Re: Working moms who DON'T use daycare

No backup. DH and I are the only ones that watch DS. We rotate our work schedules around one another. We have no family in the area. I figure if one of us is sick, DS will catch it anyway.

Re: Working moms who DON'T use daycare

My MIL watches her technically 5x a week, but for the past 2-3 months my mom has been watching her 2 days...one/other would be my back-up.

The plan is that my in-laws and my parents will take turns watching the babies. I am getting worried about when my in-laws go on vacation (which they do frequently). I think that possibly my SIL can watch him, or my DH will have to take off. I need to save the sick days for the next baby. I am going to use 44 days to have this one.

Re: Working moms who DON'T use daycare

My ILs watch Jayden most of the time. DH has his own law practice so if he doesn't have court or appointments he'll stay home. My job is pretty flexible, if I don't have meetings with the client I could work from home. We do have a family friend who has a daycare that we can bring Jayden to if DH and I can't stay home.

I would have to take leave. I might also try and work a few hours from home.
