"working" on maternity leave?
I want to take 16 weeks off from work because I want to breastfeed as long as possible without dealing with the stress of pumping but I cant afford to take more than that.
I mentioned it to my boss and could literally hear her gulp over the phone. I understand her side because I am in charge of a brand new program that starts a few weeks after the twins are due. I am willing to "work from home" (aka check in for FREE on an as needed basis) for the last month but I'm not sure how suggesting that will or won't jeopardize my situation. Any advice?

Re: "working" on maternity leave?
i honestly dont think i would offer to check in....
you may think you will feel up to it but in the end not want to bother and then your job will be disappointed. plus they may wonder why you cant come in if you are willing to work from home.
if you are allowed to take 16 weeks and have job security i say go for it...and then just surprise them by checking in (calls emails etc) for the last month.

Re: "working" on maternity leave?
My last maternity leave this happened to me. Implenting new program while I was out, that I would be a big part of. I just checked in etc...and it all worked out fine.
This time I am taking 16 weeks again, and my boss just said she would pay me to "check in" from home earlier...lol

That's the thing... I'm not sure if I will or not. Although a few of my coworkers have taken longer than the 12 weeks (and worked while off) so I think I have a good argument.

Legally, your job is probably only secure for 12 weeks, maximum. If your company has a policy that allows you to use vacation, personal or sick time as well, then you might have a case. I'd go to HR first and find out what your options are.

They are ok with it, I dont think my supervisor is though and she's the one with the final say.

Hm, then that's a tough one. What about coming back after 12w but working pt? My company offers up to 6 weeks of additional pt maternity leave. Someone in my dept right now only comes in for 15 hours a week. This way you could maintain your responsibilities while still spending most of your time home with the babies and BFing.

That's a good idea too. I'll keep that in mind if they knock this idea down. They are supposedly meeting now

If you do have job security, I agree, just surprise them. You may think now you can check in, but you never know. I really had planned on checking some of my emails while I was out the 12 weeks on maternity leave home with my twins,
Yea, right! That never happened. I literally had no free time and my boys didn't fully sleep through the night until about 4 months old so I was a walking zombie. And this was with my mom helping me during the day while DH was at work. I breastfed and formula fed until they were 6 weeks old. I had hoped to do it longer, but I was done.
GL! Hope you get approved for the 16 weeks. That's awesome if you do.
