Worried - my 4 week old sleeps all day, is this normal?
Hi. I'm a new mom of a 4 week old baby boy. My little guy sleeps almost all day. His only really alert period is in the morning around 9 AM and this lasts for maybe an hour, sometimes an hour and a half. Other than this, he drinks a bottle every 3.5 hours and sleeps. He isn't really alert after the bottles, he's moreso 1/2 asleep.
Is this normal? I'm worried that he sleeps too much. I haven't been around newborns so I don't know what's normal and what isn't. Also, he was born 3 weeks early (sudden pre-eclampsia) so he would have been full term last weekend - not sure if this has something to do with it.
Is this normal behavior? Should I be concerned?
TIA!

It is normal behavior. Most newborns sleep most of the day away. I wouldn't worry...this is the time that a baby's body is working so hard, being out in the world and with that comes the need for rest. Enjoy the quiet time!
Congrats!

this sounds like my DS who is 11 days old. Sleeps after a bottle, well lately it takes him a little while to go out, but sleeps most of the day and is figity at nite.
i think its normal. i've asked on here b/c i wast sure either. they'll start developing their patterns and be more alert as time goes on.

it's so normal! They are getting used to the world outside and it's exhausting to them! In a few months you're going to be saying "Help, my baby WON'T nap!" (just kidding!)

Re: Worried - my 4 week old sleeps all day, is this normal?
My DS is sleeping on me as I type. DS isn't usually awake for more than an hour at a time and that's rare. He's most active after his first morning feeding and in the evening. When he's alrert I read to him or put him on his play mat and play. Once he zones out I put him in his bouncer, swing or just hold him and he falls asleep. I think your little guy is quite normal.

Re: Worried - my 4 week old sleeps all day, is this normal?
When my dd was a newborn (shes 3 months now) I worried about this ALL the time. I thought something was wrong because she literally slept ALL day (it didn't help that she had her days/nights confused) I used to make my husband look it up on the internet to make sure that it was normal. Its VERY normal and by about 3 months now (as someone said above) my biggest worry is the days she WON'T nap. It goes on for awhile though, def don't worry about it.

Totally normal. Newborns can't really sleep too much. They are doing a lot of growing, they need a lot of sleep. Enjoy the quiet time while you can.........before you know it he will be up most of the day!!!
