6 week old sleeping during the day question

My DS seems to sleep a lot during the day. How much is too much? How much time should he be awake?
TIA

Re: 6 week old sleeping during the day question

For me at 6 weeks old.. I let them sleep and sleep as much as they wanted during the day... The reason being was that they needed to eat every 4 hrs anyway, night or day so to me if they weren't sleeping during the night no reason to keep them up.. Around 10 weeks old (when they started sleeping through the night) that is when I would wake them from their naps.. At this point they sleep through the night about 8 hrs than I let them sleep in the morning hrs but after 10:00 they only nap 20 minutes here and there until night time again.. Unless I notice they are very very sleepy which may mean they are having a growth spurt in that case I will let them sleep more.

I think I would try to wake DD after 3 or 4 hours of sleep during the day. My goal at the time was for her to have a bottle every 3 hours during the day.

At this age they do sleep a LOT.

Re: 6 week old sleeping during the day question

Mine is 6 weeks old too, sleeps most of the day. Wish she would sleep as great at night. I feel bad, but what can I really do with her at this age to keep her awake? I feel like I am neglecting her but she is just tired! She does wake on her own, like clockwork, every 3-3.5 hrs to eat for sure, even around the clock.

My DD is 5 weeks. If she sleeps, I let her until she wants to wake up. I follow the rule of "never wake a sleeping baby". If shes hungry, she'll wake up

Re: 6 week old sleeping during the day question

I guess I am asking because the past few nights, DS has fallen asleep around 4:30 pm and did not wake up until almost 8:30 pm. I just don't know if this is too late to take a nap but how would I keep him awake?

I would let him sleep. I was told by a Ped that babies at this age sleep a lot. In my case my DD liked to be awake and didn't sleep that much. When the baby is hungry he will wake up.
