Would like to get involved...
I would like my family to get involved in an active charity. An organization with a great cause (I'm sure all do) and that has various fundraisers/activities all year long.
Any recommendations?

If you are going to want one with activities all year long-that will be the big ones:
Susan G Komen for the Cure(one of the best charities ever)
American Heart or Cancer
Make a Wish
Ronald McDonald Charities
You could also look into soup kitchens or get involved with the Junior League or a social organization which works with different charities throughout the year. I work with charities through my job so let me know if you need more help

I second Ronald McDonald House. We had to stay there in December, and were blown away by the generousity and amenities available there. I had seen the boxes for the charity at McDonald's for years but never really knew much about it. I thought it was just a house.....it's really a hotel with full kitchens in the common area. Many meals are provided for guests. They are always looking for volunteers. It is on the property of LIJ in New Hyde Park.

Street Project is an amazing way to get involved in volunteer activities!
They do many different volunteer activities throughout the NYC area. We recently teamed up with them and Publicolor to paint Jamaica High School. Doing so we learned a lot about both organizations.

Tuesday's Children (www.tuesdayschildren.org) - they help children who lost a parent in 9/11. They have mentoring programs and such not just for kids, but for families. They do great work helping those who were victims of terriorism in general.
