I was actually thinking the same thing. What exactly is offensive about the use of a Native American as a mascot? What makes it different than say a Fighting Irish mascot which I've never heard anyone say was offensive. A mascot is supposed to symbolize strength and victory right? So wouldn't that be complimentary?
Are you kidding? Its incredibly offensive and puts an entire race of people on a different level - it makes them caricatures. Think about it - you are putting a race of people on the par of a Tiger or a Lion. Think about how it would be if you put any other race of people on a hat.
The Indians mascot is buffoonish and super offensive.
The fighting Irish does the same thing.
The fighting Irish mascot is a leprechaun. And there have been studies done that show Native American children suffer from low self esteem and other psychological effects when they grow up around these type of mascots.
Its so ridiculous to me - its sports. Something so meaningless. (And I love to watch sports). Just change the names.

Would send your child to school in this shirt?
I guess it's all about how you frame it. A mascot to me is something to be admired amd symbolizes something positive. Its not just a funny caricature. My high school was the Marines, another local high school are the Sailors. To me it's actually paying homage to a group rather than disrespecting it. But it's all about design and execution too and I totally realize that.

Google Native American mascot controversy.
It’s a stereotype. I swear they need a mascot with a woman in Ugg boots, jeans, and a cardigan carrying a Pumpkin Spice Latte getting into her SUV for people to really get it.

A mascot could be done in a way that is meant to honor a culture or group of people, but that's how most Native American inspired mascots were done.
Their depictions are typically caricature of what white Americans think a Native American is like, e.g., head dresses, tomahawks, etc. Commonly paired with an offensive name, e.g., the Red Skins is a derogatory term. My high school team was the Marauders, which is people who steal and attack people, and it was paired with a caricature of a Native American in a head dress. It took close to 10 years to get the mascot changed.
Here is a pretty comprehensive wikipedia article about the use of Native American Mascots. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_American_mascot_controversy

Re: Would send your child to school in this shirt?
An example of a way it can be done respectfully:
The NCAA grants waivers to schools, like the Florida State Seminoles, with mascot names that refer to a particular Native nation as long as the school gets permission from that nation and works continuously with them, making sure the images honor the tribe. The idea is that if the ethnic nickname comes from the group itself, it implies pride, not prejudice.
It came from this article on why people don't take offense to the Fighting Irish.

The Irish are not a race of people that are still marginalized in 2017.

I wouldn’t like it, tbh. Then again, I’m not that type of person and I wouldn’t like to be stereotyped like that. I also hate the word biitch and think it’s a terrible word for women, but that’s just me.
(And that’s not aimed at you NN. I was just saying it in general)

Re: Would send your child to school in this shirt?
I actually took a detour today past the hs where I live (and my old hs), and I was shocked to see there’s a huge painting of an Indian chief with full headdress on the side of the wall. We are the Warriors. Most icons now are just a W but I was shocked to see the painting there. The name and the image stereotypes all Indians as being 1) fighters and 2) all headress-wearing. I unfortunate live in a hugely conservative area and so I don’t know if anyone would ever really press the issue. I plan on sending my girls to catholic school so for the time being, this offense won’t be my cross to bear, but we’ll see what happens over time...

Am I kidding? Are YOU kidding? I was asking the question because I honestly never thought about it and my first thought was a mascot is a symbol of strength. I was asking the question to genuinely understand it. Your response shows the problem with any kind of debate right now. People cant just educate someone on their point of view without being snarky or making them feel like a jerk for asking a question.
