Would you send your child to an unlicensed pre-school?
The one I am going to see is unlicensed, I believe.
I am not sure what that means/doesn't mean....give me insight here.
What should I ask?

I would not - I like the fact that my daycare (i know you are looking at a preschool) is being monitored by the state and has to follow certain regulations.

are they allowed to not be? I would assume the state mandates all of them if they are legal??

I don't think I would care if it was licensed or not. I'm guessing some church and synagogue ones may not be licensed?

as someone who licenses state run facilities...and the stuff I see with even licensed programs...I would never in a million years put my kid in an unlicensed program.ever.

Is there a list where you can find the ones that are?
I never even would have thought that there would be programs that AREN'T...I thought they all had to be, but my friend said differently.
I was pretty surprised.

Re: Would you send your child to an unlicensed pre-school?
Never...but that's me.
There are quite a number of requirements that a state regulated center must adhere to in order to be licensed. You can find this information online fairly easily. Those I would be most concerend with--ratio of student to children, mainteneance of facility, training and ages of teachers, certifciations (CPR, etc.) guidelines for sick children, infection control, policies on providing food, ensuring safety/discipline solutions, BACKGROUND CHECKS, this is a biggie!! I also believe regulated daycares have educational requirements for those that can monitor different age groups...there are a LOT more!

not sure who would be there regulating agencY...try ocfs? or dept of education. Maybe they are licensed as a daycare, but not preschool...but do preschool type curriculum....
that I would be fine with...bc they need to follow certain regulatory standards as far as safety and curriculum is concerned....some type of standard for regulations on fire, safety and physical environment...would be what you should minimally expect....

Re: Would you send your child to an unlicensed pre-school?
No. Licenced places are regulated and inspected.
They also are checked for following educational programs set by State standards.
I think I would be OK with unlicenced for a nanny but not for a school type setting.

DD's isn't. I didn't even know that it wasn't. It's a church-run program. It's been around forever and everyone raves about it. She loves it.
So the answer would be...yes I guess
