Would this bother you? (babysitting related)

So last night DH and I had a graduation party to go to and DH asked one of his coworks (she has a son) to stay with the kids while we went. We put the kids to bed so she was really just hanging out. I spoke to her one time because she called and everything was ok.
I call around 11:15pm to let her know we were on our way home and no one answers so I think to myself she was in the bathroom. I give her 5 minutes and again no answers. I repetely called her cell phone and my house (has caller Id on the phone and on the tv) until 11:30 and she did not answer the phone. I am freaking out because I am thinking something happens. DH is trying to calm me down saying she probably fell asleep. Even if she did I called the house 7 tmes and the phone is loud when the house is quiet. I get home and she was just sitting their awake and said that she didn't hear the phone Chat Icon . I told her how many times I called including her cell.
I just bothered me so much that I really don't want he to watch the kid again. Am I being unreasonable here? I even decided to call the house while I was home to see if the ringer was on and it was.

Yes, that would definitely bother me. How weird that she didn't hear the phone.

This is my whole thing too. I mean the hallway to the bedrooms is all open and overlooks into the livingroom so everything in their echos. You would definitly have heard it.

Glad to know I am alone..thanks

If your kids aren't dead, I wouldn't worry about it. And if she is a good sitter, I wouldn't cut off my nose to spite my face as the old saying goes. Tell her next time that you will be calling through the evening, here is the phone, have it with you or near you etc and put the ringer on high. Simple solution.

Re: Would this bother you? (babysitting related)

If she couldn't hear the phone... how can she hear if DC needed her???Chat Icon

If I had such an incident with a sitter, that sitter would NEVER babysit for me again. I mean, it's one thing to ignore the phone once due to a bathroom run or something, but repeated attempts... Nah... that's just not right to do that to the parent. If a parent is calling it's not to say hi, they want to know that everything is okay and any decent sitter should get that. My DD's daycare center told me that I can call as often as I want... then I wouldn't expect any less (in fact I'd expect more) from the person watching her in my home. That's just me though.

How old is she? Is she a smoker? Maybe she was outside smoking and didn't take the portable phone with her.

Obviously, it's still unacceptable to not answer when a parent calls. Personally, I wouldn't use her again.

I would be very bothered and probably wouldn't use her again. Sounds like there's no reason why she shouldn't have heard either phone Chat Icon

I agree. If the phone is loud enough to wake her, then she was either ignoring it (totally unacceptable) or went outside, which is completely inappropriate!

Sounds to me like she did fall asleep and woke up when she heard your car...I did that when I used to babysit. I would use her again and just tell her to keep the phone near her

I agree with this. And I kind of think that maybe she was a little embarassed that she fell asleep.

ITA - if she fell asleep - who cares - she should have said that. To say that she didn't hear it??? Give me a break!

Our phone at home hasn't been working too well lately. Sometimes it goes down for days. DId you get an answering machine when you call? Is it possible your phone at home might have gone down? It sounds very fishy to me, but is there a possibility? We have cable phone and it's very unreliable.

Yup, ours too. Yesterday I kept calling the house only to hear after several rings that our number was not in service Chat Icon Sometimes my sister calls and she says it rings and rings and no v/m kicks on and meanwhile I never heard it ring.
