Would you buy a home near a cemetery?
I have come across a home in a GREAT area, in a really great school district, at a really fair price, and fitting all of our home requirements. Only hitch is that the backyard backs up to a cemetery. It is one of the only homes we have come across that we like that fits our criteria.
Would you even consider purchasing a home near a cemetery?? Am I crazy for considering it? Has anyone ever lived near a cemetery? Should I just get over it and put in the offer since it is a great house?
Appreciate your opinions!

Re: Would you buy a home near a cemetery?
I currently live across from a cemetary. In fact I am on a corner so across the street on the side and across the street in the front I face the cemetary.
At first I was terrified of it, but the truth is I do not even notice it anymore. First of all, it is very QUIET which is wonderful and there is a lot of pretty trees and colorful flowers all over the cemetary.
If you could put up a fence on your property to block the view maybe I would consider it. At least you do not have to worry about your neighbors disturbing you at night

Re: Would you buy a home near a cemetery?
I probably would- I lived in an apt next door to a funeral home- I didnt mind at all the only issue was alot of thru traffic when there was a service. I would just get a tall pvc fence to block the view. and plants some bushes.

Re: Would you buy a home near a cemetery?
I wouldn't feel comfortable with it. It'd be a bigger issue if you were near the roads or entrance way with funerals, visitors for major holidays, etc.
Another point to consider is when you want to sell down the road - it may take a bit longer or affect your price a bit since it's less desirable for some house hunters.

Nope, never. I get the creeps just driving by them. I cant imagine having to drive by one all the time coming and going to my own house.

Re: Would you buy a home near a cemetery?
Honestly you can't even see the cemetary from the back yard, it is a bit separated. The entrance to the cemetery is not near the house it is on the other side of the cemetary completely. I am definitly a little freaked out, but I couldn't afford a home in this area otherwise. My other concern is the resale value.

My parents did when I was younger. We had trees separating us so we could not see (maybe in the winter but we had a fence too!). We never got noise on that side of the house.
We never got freaked out either.

Re: Would you buy a home near a cemetery?
is there a high fence where you wouldnt have to see it from the backyard? if so, then i'd be fine with it. i just wouldnt want my kids playing in the backyard and being weirded out by seening headstones while they play on their swing sets!

No I wouldn't feel comfortable with that. I would just wait a while and look for another home. It's tough for resale too I would think

Re: Would you buy a home near a cemetery?
Cemetaries don't creep me out but I would be concerned with resale. If I intended on living there for the long haul and I absolutely loved the house - I'd buy it. If I had intentions of selling in 10 years, I would have to reconsider.

Re: Would you buy a home near a cemetery?
Helllllllllllllllllll no!!!! I'm way too much of a chicken to live that close to a cemetary. Nope, couldn't do it..
Plus, I'd be concerned about the resale value because of the chickens out there like me that won't want to live behind a cemetary.
Also, if you ask me, to get me to live next to a cemetary the price better be alot more than reasonable - it should be a steal.

Re: Would you buy a home near a cemetery?
I wouldnt buy one because it would scare me to live by a cemetary. But even if it didnt, seeing how many people said never gives you a pretty good indication of the impact this would have on re-sale.
A little story though: my father lived next to a cemetary growing up, and he and his brother were out in the backyard one very hot day when an old man leaned over the fence asking if he could please have a glass of water. I guess the man was all rumpled and sweaty and my father and his brother thought it was one of the dead people that came back to life and ran away screaming. It turned out it was just a very parched rabbi who had just performed a funeral service.

Thank you for the story....it really made me laugh.
I am trying tell myself that living in the house it won't bother me, but I think I am kidding myself

this same thing happened to me.. we loved the house, but we decided not to make a bid, b/c of the cemetery.... we ended up finding something else we liked.
