would you buy a home on a main rd? POLL
saw a beautiful house in wantagh on park ave. ( went with my gf not for me) but its near the train/sunrise hwy. and the seaford oyster bay and you could hear all that. my question is how many of you would purchase the home. its beautiful and great school district wantagh. just curious.
for those who chose depends- what does it depend on?
I personally couldnt, be too afraid.

Re: would you buy a home on a main rd? POLL
I live in NJ, but we did buy a house on a main road. It was definately a concern of mine and after bring both sets of parents to see the house before we bid on it, we decided to buy it. For us, the house is set way back up on a hill. If the house had been on the other side of the street, we would not have even considered the house because the houses on the other side of the street are right on top of the street.

I have seen cars flying down that street - I used to live on a cut through road and that was too busy for our landlord to trust with her kids - I do not want to buy on a main road because of that experience

we live on a main road, i hate it, can never get out of your driveway. it's not a major main road but it's still a through way to get anywhere. our house is set back so it's not so bad. can't walk on the street though.

personally, I wouldn't.
My SIL lives on a main road and she is always bringing the kids with the bikes over to my MIL's or our house because they can't ride by them.

that sounds similar to the house I grew up- it was on a main road- (well not when my parents built it) but it was so far back off the road- it didn't matter

Not unless I had several acres, like the homes on Northern Blvd in Muttontown & Old Brookville.
And even then, I think my DH would oppose it. It's too much of a risk with children and pets.

Re: would you buy a home on a main rd? POLL
for me it would depend on where the driveway was situated and how much street parking there is. i've seen great houses the corner of main roads and if the driveway was on the side street and not on the busy road, i would consider it. because then i wouldnt have to worry about getting in and out of my driveway.
im not concerned with busy roads as long as the house is completely fenced in.

No.
- Too much traffic to go in and out of your driveway - Too much noise - Resale value is not as good.

Absolutely not. It was the one thing on our house hunting list that we would not compromise on for reasons already listed on the thread.

Re: would you buy a home on a main rd? POLL
We wouldn't. We are right off a main road right now (2 houses in) and it's awful. There is non-stop noise and people drive like lunatics.
Before we started looking, we agreed that we wouldn't even consider a house on a main road (we considered "main road" anything with a double yellow line)
Everything is a personal choice, though. If you find a house you absolutely fall in love with and it happens to be on a main road, only YOU can make that decision.

Re: would you buy a home on a main rd? POLL
possibly if it was over an acre & set way back I might consider it, but I'm not a fan of traffic noise so I doubt I'd find something in that setting that was quiet. we don't have little kids, so that is not a concern. there are people that would benefit from a main road, people that may want to have a professional office in their home for example.

Re: would you buy a home on a main rd? POLL
A home on a main road would definitely not be my first choice, but it it had really big property, room for guests to park on the street, and wasn't near a commercial area, I'd consider it for the right house/right price.

Re: would you buy a home on a main rd? POLL
It depends on where on park. Near the 7-11, firehouse, etc. No. Further east, like past Otto's Deli I would, it's a lot less busy.
My mom lives sorta near the rail road in Wantagh and you tune it out after a few days. I don't even hear it now when I visit her and I haven't lived there in quite a few years now.

On a sunday , standing in front of the house I could hear the hum of cars and motorcycles and was like OMG how do people deal with that noise.

It would depend on how much I wanted to be in a particular area and what I could afford. When my mom was looking, she wanted to be in Wantagh b/c her cousin was a SAHM there so she knew that there would be someone around if my brother and I really needed help while she was at work (and an emergency did come up once). So she bought a very small house about 2 blocks north of sunrise, since that was all she could afford. When we first moved in you heard the trains, all the noise from Sunrise, and within 2 weeks you just tuned it out. I haven't lived in her house for 7 years now and I still don't hear it when I go home to see her.

I know that area really well. There is a stop sign right across and on the same side as Otto's so it's a little less busy with the cars (they need to stop!). You do drown out that noise from the SOB after a little while.
But, even with that, I think I would pass on that road - it's only going to get more busy.

If I really loved the house and it had everything I ever wanted then yes I would live on a main rd.
