Re: would you buy a house..
I think its funny everyone said no. I wouldn't either, but here's another though, even if you were going to, doesn't look like you will ever resell it!

Re: would you buy a house..
Is the house behind a sound barrier? I grew up my whole life in a house that was less than the length of 2 football fields from the LIE and then the service road when it was put in and the only complaints we had would be a truck backfire every once in awhile. Actually, when I went to college I missed the white noise/hum from the LIE and had trouble sleeping the first couple of weeks!

Re: would you buy a house..
Our house is about two blocks off the LIE and we can hear the traffic at night. I didn't realize how much white noise there was until we were in the house. I'm totally happy with the house, though....I don't mind the white noise at all and it's so easy to get onto the LIE in the morning.

Re: would you buy a house..
We saw a house that backed the Northern State and we said forget it. I was afraid of the resale value

Re: would you buy a house..
Our house is on the side of the Southern State Parkway and we love it because we have no neighbors across the street and because its a highway it is only white noise. We wound up getting alot more house for our money and for us that was worth it.

Re: would you buy a house..
The LIE no, but growing up I did live across the street from SSP. Their was a road then the woods but in the fall and winter you could see the highway. You never heard anything when you were outside and I think it was because their were no trucks.

Re: would you buy a house..
Dh and I just bought a house off the service road of sunrise highway.. we have houses across the stree and to either side of us. when your in the house you can't hear anything even with the windows open. You could barley hear anything in the backyard..You really have to listen for it. I wouldn't knock every house that was close to a major road. There are some benefits to living near a major roadway.. what better way to check if there is traffic then looking out your front/back door

Re: would you buy a house..
I would not automatically rule it out. The apartment we currently rent is right off of the NYS Thruway. There are no sound barriers and while on occassion I can hear the cars pass by, in general I do not even notice it.
Also important to note - I am the lightest sleeper ever. Water dripping out of the gutter in the middle of the night will wake me up, but cars passing have yet to do so. Go see the house and then make your decision.

Re: would you buy a house..
no i wouldn't. My sis & BIL just moved into their first house, they used to live on a road that was an exit road for the Southern State- it was noisy AND more importantly dangerous, b/c they had a ton of people speeding up & down their block.....not a good block for my niece to grow up on.
good luck in your house search!
ETA- I live in a semi noisy area- 5 minutes away from JFK, so I get planes flying over all day!! it's most noticeable this time of year where you want to have your windows open.....once A/C goes back on, we won't hear it! lol

Re: would you buy a house..
depends on how far away it is. my dad's house technically backs up against the northern state but there is a small forest-like thing inbetween so its a sorta kinda situation. if it was like that, then yes. If it was right on top of the LIE, no. when DH and i were looking to buy, a very wise poster said something about how you should always keep in mind that you can change every detail of a house except its location.
