Would you buy a house that a murder associated with it, but not in it?
We can pick em, let me tell ya...
We looked at a home in a very nice area of Cheshire, CT, it is in foreclosure and has been on the market for a year and half. It needs at least 50-75K worth of work-bathrooms need to be gutted, floor replaced, new roof, windows, doors, new kitchen. But for the area it would be worth it.
SOoooo, my realtor does a bit of research for me, and comes to find the owner and the daughter of this house were murdered in a double murder suicide in a different house in Cheshire. This was the house she bought when she divorced her husband that shot her and her daughter with a shotgun in the house they were selling the house they lived in as husband and wife. He didn't want her to have the money from the house they were selling that they both lived in, so when the family went over to clean it up for an open house, he shot them with a shot gun and the two boys escaped to a neighbors.
So no murder in the house we looked at, but the owner was murdered.
Not sure if how i feel about the vibes of that house. This would explain why this house has been on the market for so long and didn't get bought at auction....
Discuss? What would you do?

I think I would have to be in the house to see if I was comfortable before I made the decision.

When I first saw Cheshire, I though it was going to be about the Dr. and his family. If it was that house, then I would def, say no.
Cheshire is a great town however I don't know if I could ever get the murder out of my mind. I would feel weird. I know it may sound stupid but I would feel the house is haunted even though they never lived there. I guess it is just the feeling of bad luck.
With that being said, I would probably pass.

OMG, absolutely no way would i ever even knock that house and build on the land...This murder happened the Feb 07 ( a few months before Dr tragedy.)
This is what i'm thinking...i can't get the murder out of my head! And I totally believe in spirits/ghosts...
My realtor is looking into the deal on the finance part of the house, but my heart is def telling me to move on.
Oh boy can i pick em...

All depends on if you believe in 'that stuff' or not.
sounds like you do.. so if it would bother you to l ive there, then i'd pass on it.
personally, it wouldn't bother me, but thats just me.

Re: Would you buy a house that a murder associated with it, but not in it?
I totally would.
Just think, there are people in many houses that meet unfortunate ends that we never even get to hear about.
And I think I'd rather live in the house they had so many hopes for, than a house that a murderer lived in.

Re: Would you buy a house that a murder associated with it, but not in it?
When Joe and I bought our house we fell in love with it right away and with in 10 minutes we put in an offer....Well some co-workers did some research on the house and found out the previous owner died in the house....He was a Minister in his 80's or 90's a and wanted to die at home so he did...in the livingroom I believe of natural causes.....I was so spooked out about this at first, but I also love this house so much that in the end it wasn't as big of a deal as I thought. If the murders had taken place in the house I would pass, but if you LOVE the house and you can get it at a responabile price I say go for it.....I had my FIL, also a minister, say a prayer in our house to ease my fears...

Re: Would you buy a house that a murder associated with it, but not in it?
The only thing that matters is how you feel about it. My neighbor still lives in the house where he grew up - the same house where his mother and uncle killed his father a couple decades ago. His mother is now living in that house with him (she is the sweetest lady). I'm guessing it doesn't bother them. Me? I don't think I'd be able to live there if I was in their situation.
Of course, the house you are looking at is just associated with people who met an unfortunate end and didn't actually occur there. It's all how you feel about it.

Yay, more CT people! I'm in Farmington.
I don't think I would let that bother me...as long as no one was murdered IN the house, ya know?

I would because it's not the same house. If the murder had happened there, then that would be a different story. Did she ever even live in the house?

She lived in the house with her daughter and 2 sons for a year.

It wouldn't bother me. I am a religious person and whenever we move or purchase a new home - we have a priest come bless it anyway so I wouldn't care what happened before - for me the blessing would take care of all of that.

If I really loved the house, I'd consider it since they weren't killed in that house. I definitely understand why you're hesitant though.

But that didn't happen in the house so why would it bug you out? That is like saying that you couldn't buy the house because a previous owner died in 9/11. A lot of people die of natural causes in their homes. As long as the murder didn't occur there I would buy it. Maybe people are turned off by all the work it needs.

I agree!
ETA: A lot of houses have death associated with them, people die in houses all the time!
