that house needs alot of help on the outside- I don't like how the driveway is blocking then entry way
I agree - I have a high ranch, but my driveway is to the side (the garage is attached on the side)
I would pass!

ABSOLUTELY! The house could be ugly inside and out........it wouldn't make a difference to us cuz we'd change it anyway.
It's actualy what we are looking for b/c DH is quite the handyman
i agree however, it is on the higher end of her budget so she cannot afford to make that many changes.
Yep - at least not right away.
Christine, I think if the style of the house is not to your liking, that is harder to change/accept. If it is in bad shape on the outside (driveway, landscaping, siding, roof, windows - I'm listing all the things that we had to change on our house) that is easier to overlook and more affordable than doing construction to change the total look of the house.

Re: Would you buy a house that was ugly on the outside? Updated with Pic
Well - the outside isnt that bad. I was picturing something much worse. But it's still not really my style and i think it would cost a lot to make it more my style....
If the inside, location and property were all really nice, I would consider it. It would all depend on how long before I could re-do the outside.

Re: Would you buy a house that was ugly on the outside? Updated with Pic
from your previous home posts you seem to like a more traditional style house. I don't think that you can ever do anything to make this look like a colonial or tudor, but I do think you can eventually make it look better with larger windows and maybe some shutters, but it will probably always look somewhat contemporary.
But I think you said that you have not even seen it yet....so I would just wait until saturday. Maybe you will love it so much for other reasons that the outside wont matter as much.

It's not that bad - so the decision is up to you.
Me, I wouldn't buy it - I don't find it aesthetically pleasing in the least. The door and driveway placement is throwing me off and it looks like it has had a few additions - so that red-flags me too.

this is so true- I once bought a car I kind of liked and I spent 2 years plotting to get rid of it
and that was only a $30K investment-

see i think shutters, bigger windows, porch can make it prettier
I don't know how much all that costs though. My DH is handy so personally if I loved everything else about it I would buy.
But if you are having a few doubts - maybe shop around a bit more

w/ shutters, a colored trim, some minor landsacping and window boxes, i think it would look A LOT different. one thing that i REALLY dislike though is the fact that there is no garage (or is there?). not to offend but w/ the cars parked right in front of the house, it looks a little low rent and takes away from what the house really could be.

Now that I see a pic of the house I would not even bother to waste time on it. It is going to take alot of work and $$$ to renovate it to your liking.

It all depends on the location & property.
Same here!
same here. You can always do something to the front to make it look nicer - like a porch or some king of extension or awning.
ETA I would probably want to put the cedar shake shingles on it and shutters....to start

Our exterior was ugly (so was the interior for that matter). The roof siding and windows were all dated from the 70's and the landscaping left a lot to be desired.
We are in the process of updating everything now
Even though it needed work, we both saw the potential
Ours was the same way. We started on the inside and figured we woudl get to the outside. All in all if the inside is nice and you like the house I don't think it should hold you back from buying it . It can always be replaced not right now but in the future.

It actually has a 2 car detached garage on other side of the house. Maybe we could rip up the black-top and put grass down with a nice path to the front door.
BUT considering I havent even seen it yet, I may hate the inside too.. I always get too far ahead of myself, but I am always planning.

There are sooo many fancy shutters, siding, detailing work, porches and landscaping out there. Honestly, I don't think it's that bad at all. Needs work, but not horrendous. If it has EVERYTHING on the inside and the outside is ideal and location was what I wanted, I'd go for it.

i think some shudders, landscaping, maybe a new door and possibly a paint job would improve curb appeal-- hey, you can apply for that show on HGTV!
eta-- I would also maybe redesign the drive way-- maybe narrow it and create a walk way to the door-- the front yard is like all driveway.

Re: Would you buy a house that was ugly on the outside? Updated with Pic
I don't like the outside of my house, it has 'grown' on me after nearly three years but its not my style at all. We renovated the entire interior & one of these days we'll do the outside. My house was built in 1987 & had an addition done in 1992 so its got that dated contemporary look, but its in good shape. Its not I style I liked even when it was in style. We just loved the location, size of the house & the price. We couldn't pass it up.

Re: Would you buy a house that was ugly on the outside? Updated with Pic
One of my friends bought a house where she hated everything up to the front door but loved everything once you got inside.
Since buying the house in 2002 she replaced the fence, redid the backyard, added landscaping, new front door/screen door etc.
She figured for the amount of time she would spend looking at the outside of her house, she wasn't going to prevent her from living there since it was things she could change over time.

I dont think its that bad at all. I was picturing a really nasty looking house as I opened the thread. If everything else was to your liking, I wouldnt hesitate.

It's not bad at all. You could rip up the blacktop and put sod down and use the driveway to the side. I think putting new and bigger windows in would help a lot.
Either way, it will require work and it could add up.
Go take a look and keep an open mind. It's a contemporary and it's not my taste but it's not ugly.

Re: Would you buy a house that was ugly on the outside? Updated with Pic
At first I was opposed to it because I thought it didn't have a garage (ESSENTIAL in my opinion).
BUT, when you said it had a garage and side driveway, I would definitely consider it. It could be really cute with white shutters / trim, a white PVC porch and new stamped concrete walkway when you rip up the driveway.
My cousins have a high ranch and I LOVE the layout inside!
