Would You Buy Used Baby Furniture?
All I've been doing since I found out I was PG (not even two weeks ago) is looking at all the websites and seeing how expensive everything is and how much a baby needs! I have really really been stressing out so much about this and don't know how we're going to do this. Would you buy used baby furniture if you had to? I feel horrible but I'm scared we won't have a choice with everything. I would never get a used car seat but something like a changing table or crib? There's just so much and I don't know how we're going to do it all

Re: Would You Buy Used Baby Furniture?
We are struggling really bad right now also, I can totally feel your pain.
With that said, I would absolutely buy used baby furniture if it was in great condition. There aren't many things I would buy used, but furniture, strollers, high chairs, exersaucers, etc...I would totally buy if they were up to my "standards."

Re: Would You Buy Used Baby Furniture?
I personally wouldn't - but that's just me. There are plenty of really good cheap cribs at places like Walmart and Target. You don't have to spend a fortune on furniture!

Re: Would You Buy Used Baby Furniture?
absolutely! I would certainly want to see the condition of the furniture, and I would buy a new mattress, but there's nothing wrong with buying used furniture. Baby furniture gets used for such a short period of time, how worn could it get? Some people spend an astronomical amount of money of baby furniture, and then what? Either stick it in the basement where it becomes aged and mildewed, give it to a friend/relative in need, toss it or sell it... Just like any other wood furniture, if it looks good, there's nothing wrong with buying it used.

Absolutely! I love a great deal! What I don't get for my shower I will be looking to buy used. I don't have a ton of money, and I live by Reduce Reuse Recycle.

Thanks for those that have responded. I've been so stressed about finances and feeling so sick that I haven't gotten excited yet about being PG. Right now, it's all just a huge stress

Re: Would You Buy Used Baby Furniture?
The only two baby items I wouldn't buy used are a crib and a car seat for safety reasons. Everything else is fine so long as it's in good condition. I scored an excellent deal on a Maclaren Quest from Craigslist and am planning on buying my twin stroller from there as well. I agree with PP that you don't have to spend a lot on furniture. DS is currently using my old IKEA dresser and night stand from college. The only new piece of furniture in his room is a convertible crib which I got for just under $200 from BBB during one of their sales combined with a coupon. I'm planning on passing the crib to the new baby.

Don't feel down There will be bumps along the road, and trust me, DH and I have been stressed at times about $$$ and buying stuff for baby. Look out for consignment sales, garage/estate sales, craigslist, and mention it to family/friends that you're looking for certain things and stuff sometimes comes outta nowhere. My mom has gotten a lot of 2nd hand stuff to keep at her house when she watches baby (high chair, stroller, exersaucer etc)
And of course, remember that there is a ton out there that you DON'T need...

Re: Would You Buy Used Baby Furniture?
from what i've read..you shouldnt buy used cribs.
i guess it also depends on how many years old it is b/c at some point things get recalled or didnt meet safety standards.
other stuff like dressers, changing tables, a stroller, etc..i would go for.

Walmart - Convertible Crib for $156
Matching Changing Table - $75.00
Try not to stress too much - there is lots of stuff out there, and I'm not sure if you are having a shower but you will get a ton of stuff then!

Re: Would You Buy Used Baby Furniture?
Do you have a console height dresser? You can get a changing pad and s crew it into the back of the dresser to secure it. The furniture does not have to match. Target, Ikea, JC Penny and Walmart all sell cribs so I might look there first. I would not get a used car seat or a used crib b/c of safety.
Ikea crib for $100
Ikea crib for $80
Delta Jenny Lind at BRU for $129

Re: Would You Buy Used Baby Furniture?
Absolutely! We are!!! I am so excited too... the furniture we wanted is over $1,000 for the crib and the changing table... I was not about to throw a grand down for this stuff...
So i started my search and I found it on craigslist... for $300 for both! and it is in PRISTINE condition... I would just make sure its in amazing condition, and that of course you need to check that it is not recalled...
Good Luck!!!
ETA... I would personally rather buy a better type of furniture used... then a cheaper one... some of them are very flimsy etc.... but you need to find what you love and what is in your budget... believe me you will!

Re: Would You Buy Used Baby Furniture?
Sure! As long as the mattress is brand new, no worries! Just check for splintering of wood and if anything is wobbly. My DH and I try to cut corners as much as possible so when it was time to buy baby furniture for our DD, I shopped at JC Penney's home store. I got a "Nursery in a box" which included a changing table and crib for $169! Both are extremely sturdy and lovely looking! I bought a dresser also from JCP and it was about $190. All brand new.
Crib and changing table but in white:

Re: Would You Buy Used Baby Furniture?
I did! When I found out I was pregnant with my 2nd, let's just say I went into a bit of a panic. My DD is 7 and I didn't save anything. I started looking on craigslist and actually found someone in my town selling a crib and a changing table in mint condition. She hadn't used it in about 2 years, but she had wrapped everything in tarps and other types of cellophane. I think I got both pieces for $100.
Here's the crib...
Here's the changing table...

Re: Would You Buy Used Baby Furniture?
Don't get down!!! Baby stuff is expensive and there are a ton of moms on here who are always selling things in great condition. Check the Buy/Sell/Swap thread on the Parenting board.
You can find great deals for nursery furniture if you can't find anything you like used at BRU and BBB. They always have a clearance section. And you dont need to buy a full bedding set...they can't use the quilt for awhile or the bumpers for that fact. I bought a bedding set with DS and it was a waste...this time I bought bumpers and some matching accessories. I'll use blankets I have from DS or buy his a new one when he is old enough.

Re: Would You Buy Used Baby Furniture?
Personally, I would try to buy something inexpensive first, like other ppl said JCPenney, Target and walmart have good deals. If I still couldnt afford then yes I would but I would make sure I inspected it and cleaned it very well before use.

Yes, I'd but used furniture if it was in good condition. It can always be cleaned. I would not get used bedding though.

Re: Would You Buy Used Baby Furniture?
I sure would and actually thats what we are doing. We are having triplets and cant afford to get 3 of everything brand new. I did get some stuff at the shower but as far as the cribs and furniture we are getting used. Of course we will be getting new mattresses. I cant see spending alot of money on baby furniture that they will be using for such a short time I rather wait and get good bedroom sets for them instead. I see nothing wrong with used as long as its in good condition.

I'm sorry but I completely disagree. While we did spend a lot on furniture, it is far from just baby furniture. We picked stuff that is going to last until they leave for college. Their cribs turn into full size beds and not looks juvenile at all and is made very well.
To the OP, I would not buy a used crib unless you knew the make, model and year and made sure their were no recalls on it. A changing table you do not need. For my DD (#2) we bought a lifetime crib and a 6 draw dresser. I then put a changing pad right on top and the pad has straps that snaps to the back of the dresser. I use one of the top drawers for diapers, wipes and cream. I am not lacking any space and she has a full size closet. I would get a used dresser though

Re: Would You Buy Used Baby Furniture?
If I had to, yes I would. There's no shame in that esp if you are trying to cut corners. But there are also a lot of good deals - we got our entire set on clearance at BRU for $800 - that's a crib, dresser and armoire.
And today I am going to pick up a changing table I found on craig's list for 10 bucks!
