Would you cancel your Disney trip over this? WWYD?

I recently had to have an emergency gallbladder surgery. Usually it is minimally invasive but I had to have open surgery due to the size and location of the gallstone.

We have a long weekend (4 nights) booked for the end of September. If we cancel now, we would lose only the airfare ($900) and 1 day of parkhopper tickets that expire Sept 30. If we cancel, we don't have another time slot to go in 2013. DS starts kindergarten in 2014 so we probably won't be going to Disney for a while.

My surgeon said I would be well enough to return to work but I probably won't be well enough to walk around theme parks all day. He said I could always get a scooter. A surgical intern said I would be able to cut through all the lines since I would be disabled (not sure if he was joking or not. he is like 25 yr old kid right out of med school.)

WWYD?
A. Just cancel the trip
B. Go and rent a scooter (I feel the scooter may be a liability though because I will be able to walk most of the time and we would have a double stroller as well)
C. Try to get MIL or BIL go with DH and the kids while I stay home

I would probably still go and get the scooter. (And yes, you can skip the lines because of the scooter). My SIL just had gallbladder surgery and she recovered super quick. See how you feel next month, maybe have a backup plan just in case you really don't feel up to it. Feel better. Chat Icon

I think the minimally invasive surgery recovery is pretty week (2-3 wks). I had open surgery so recovery is more like 4-6 wks. I have a big scar (~7inches). Chat Icon

Really hoping I feel better in a month.

Go and rent the scooter. Just MAKE SURE you take care of yourself. If you're staying on property, maybe go back earlier than your DH and kids to rest. I think you can make it work, as long as your DH is on board with picking up the slack! (and if he's not, bring someone else who will!)

Since your trip is at the end of September I probably wouldn't cancel. At that point you'll be at the 4 or 5 week mark in your recovery. And yes, definitely get the scooter. You can bypass the lines which will be a big help to you, although the lines generally aren't too bad in September.

I feel like people will give me dirty looks since I am sure I will look "healthy".

I am concerned about all the walking. Even when I'm well, I get exhausted walking all day.

I lost a lot of blood, which I believe takes a while to regenerate. I declined a blood transfusion.

Who cares what people think? You have a legitimate reason to be using the scooter - it's no one else's business! Go and have fun! Chat Icon

People on the DIS Boards have whole entire discussions about people using scooters that shouldn't. Personally, I think they should MYOB.

It sounds like you maybe want to postpone. When do you absolutely have to decide?

I would go and not rent a scooter unless I had too. The kids are probably going to need a nap anyway. I would just go to parks in the morning, rest when they are napping and go back in the afternoon. Even just hang out by the pool for a bit too.

Since I just had the surgery, it is hard to imagine going to Disney right now but I'm sure I will feel much differently a few weeks from now.

I can probably wait until around labor day to make the final decision.

I would not cancel it. My dad at the age of 62 had his gall bladder removed and had the same surgery since they didin;t know what it was and just went in to see. He was almost 100% within a month and he is not in great health to begin with. I think you will be suprised how you will feel and worst case you get a scooter.

I would go and rent a scooter. I would bring a note from your doctor too. Also, fyi scooter rentals are first come first served (like strollers) so if you need one go early. Also, going at rope drop really lets you see so much more.

I went to Disneyland this summer a few months after knee surgery and got a handicapped assistance pass. I would not have been able to complete the park without it, and one night I needed to have the Disney staff assist me back to the first aid station. Well that day one family who was waiting on line asked me why my family was in the disabled line in a not nice way. I tore my acl, mcl, and lcl. I am not obviously disabled but am in pain. I told them what was wrong, but it really annoyed me someone would ask. So be prepared for idiots who have no filter and try to make you feel badly.

I always get a guest assistance card for my special needs soon, who "looks" normal. I wouldn't worry about it. They are great with all needs, even if they are temporary. Just know, that the wait for some attractions is sometimes longer than the regular standby line. Pirates of the Carribbean comes to mind.

I wouldn't cancel. See how you feel and if you need the scooter, then rent one then.

And who cares if people are looking at you? Plenty of people "look healthy" and have disabilities. If you get dirty looks, then they are the people who have the problem. Not you!

I wouldn't cancel!
I had MAJOR surgery (to remove a grapefruit sized tumor from my chest) on May 22nd. I was hospitalized for 5 days, couldn't lift my kids for 6wks etc. by June 30th I was in my friends wedding standing and dancing all around.
You'd be surprised how fast you'll gain your energy back! If u need to then rent the scooter!

This makes me feel hopeful. I had surgery last week and was just discharged home after being in the hospital for 8 days. I was in the hospital for 3 days before the actual surgery. They tried to remove the stone endoscopically twice.

I lost almost 10 pounds being in the hospital being on iv fluids only and then just liquid diet only.

Sounds like you has a complicated surgery! You must have lost a lot of blood for them to suggest a transfusion (I'm guessing you are young). Was this last week?

I'd wait to make up my mind.

Consider making a reservation at a hotel that you can cancel last minute.

Your husband is an MD, right? Ask him and trust his opinion...

I wouldn't cancel and just hope for the best. I had regular gall bladder removal and was 100% within a week. It sounds as if your was much, much more complicated, but a month is a long time. you may be feeling great by then!
