Would you consider 100.1 a fever in a 9 month old?
DS has been fighting an ear infection for almost 2 weeks now (on his second kind of medicine to try and get rid of it). He does not seem to be pulling at the ear anymore. When I was putting him down tonight he felt a little warm so I took his temp and it is 100.1. He ate fine and went right down. Would you consider this a fever and keep him home from daycare tomorrow?

I don't think so - I think 100.4 and above is considered a low grade fever at that age. It may depend on the child but for DS definitely not. In fact, his temp at night can be around 100.2 and the ped said that is perfectly normal. This is rectal temps which are higher...

as the pp said it depends where the temp was taken. If rectal i think that would be a fever.

I don't believe so. I believe my ped said it wasn't a fever until 101.3 or something to that effect, even rectally.

A rectal thermometer "should" be the most accurate read, and if you're getting 100.1, I would not consider that a fever for most kids.

100.1 is not considered a fever but it is borderline which means if he does not normally run higher temps like that he could be coming down with something. You might want to watch him and make sure tomorrow or if he wakes tonight that it hasn't gone up. My ped said a fever is anything 100.4 and up.

It would be enough for Abby's Day Care center to send her home and request to KEEP her home for at least one more day so I'd say yes it is a fever.

Really? At 9 mos? A night time temp of 100.1? That is so interesting to me b/c my ped said that could be a normal body temp at that age if the baby is active right b/f temp taking and it is done so rectally.

I agree too. I once called the ped when DS had a 100 temp rectally, he was about 6 months and the ped said that really wasnt considered a temp in an "infant"

Yes. That's what they told me. A fever over 100 and they go home.

Re: Would you consider 100.1 a fever in a 9 month old?
I dk..I hope I am wrong but after 4 kids if I get that temp it only means its going to spike at night and something is brewing. JMho but his resitance at the veryleast is down and if you send him he cann very likely get something. Max goes from that rectally straight to 104.5 I dk-it can be nothng but better safe then sorry.

Re: Would you consider 100.1 a fever in a 9 month old?
My pediatrician said that fever is 100.4 rectally. It is lower for other spots, like under the arm, or mouth, because some of the heat can escape, and it isn't as accurate. My DD's daycare doesn't consider it a fever unless it is over 101. But if it is 100, or if she is acting funny, they keep checking to see if it will go higher (it usually has- not because all 100 temps will spike, but because they don't measure her temp unless she is acting out of sorts, and that usually means something is brewing).

Our pediatrician said over 101 is a fever. They all said that under 100.5 was normal 'teething' temps. We take them all rectally.
