Would you ever rent out a friend's house if they went overseas for a couple of years?
So, DH just called, and one of our good friends live in Oceanside in a very nice home. Apparently his company wants to send him to London for two years so he offered us to rent out the house for $1000 a month.
DH isnt even home yet, so we havent even talked about it, but my first reaction is no. We are currently renting one of my parent's homes in Queens for cheaper than that.
I wouldnt feel like its my own place bc I couldnt change anything. I reminded DH that we pay less and he said - "well you could live in a house on LI." He forgets that doesnt really matter to me. I can wait - its not that we cant buy a house - we are looking right now.
I just need some other points of view. Maybe if our rent was more money than what he would charge us it would make sense, but it's more so it seems stupid to me.
TIA

I don't think I would do it.
To rent this house will cost more $$ then you're paying now. I would rather wait it out and keep saving our $$$ so we could move to "my own" house> I would feel weird living in someone else's house.

I would do it. Especially that it's in oceanside (where i grew up).
Thing is though... do you HAVE to stay for the 2 years? That might be hard being that you are looking for houses of your own now.
And what about furniture? If we did that we would want to use our own bedroom set, etc.
That is much less than our rent now and it would give us a chance to save up, stay in the town we want to live in, and be able to have a large space for 2 years. If you decide against it, are they willing to have others rent it out? FM me if you want.

i don't know...the fact that it's a friend's house and all his stuff would be there would be hard. it's not always good to mix friendship with business. if you really don't care, just stick with what you have!

Ok, I just decided to re-read your post more carefully and you said you rent a "home". Is it a whole house or part of a house like a basement apt? If I was already renting a house (w/ a few bedrooms) I don't think I would leave to rent a friend's house for more $.

I wouldn't do it because what happens if he gets sent home early and I guess mixing money and friends just never seems to work out.

Not in your situation. Maybe if I was looking for an apartment.

it doesn't seem like it would make sense to pay more, live further from the city where you work- when you already have a good deal

What if something broke?
What if a major problem comes up with the house (roof, burner, etc.)?
I would never do it. Money can ruin a relationship sometimes.
Kepp looking for your own place and good luck!
