Not if I wanted my principal to rip me a new one!
No seriously, I got strep once over MLK weekend but I came back with a doctors note so all was good.

My district would give me a really big problem if I did, although it just may be worth it

Re: Would you ever take a day off to extend an already long weekend?
Not just for the heck of it, but if I felt very sick or had an emergency or an important event to attend, then I would take off without a second thought.

Re: Would you ever take a day off to extend an already long weekend?
i'm doing it in november. i work in NJ and we have off on a thursday and friday for the NJ state teachers convention. so its a 4 day weekend. I'm a speech therapist, so theres never really much at the convention that pertains to me so i usually don't go. BUT.. DHs cousin is getting married down in NC that weekend. The wedding is sunday night, so i need to take monday off to travel home. so i'm making a 4 day weekend into a 5 day weekend. my principal was completely fine with it- i showed him the invite, etc. i had to fill out a form and get it approved by the superintendent ( just like any personal day). it was approved. granted, we didn't HAVE to go... but DHs parents moved away and they are going to the wedding too. so it'll be a nice chance to spend time with them without having them in our house! LOL

I just got married and took the Monday of before Rosh Hashanah's so I could go away for 4 days.
It's not my usual m.o., and I left great plans

I picked other since a woman at my school took off the monday before rosh hashana and the friday after Yom Kippur to go on college visits with her daughter. I thought it was perfect timing

Re: Would you ever take a day off to extend an already long weekend?
It is frowned upon in the district, but my principal is the one who approves days off and he is very laid back-
I had a family reunion cruise last year around MLK day and I took a day off- He was fine with it since I am not someone who does this on regular occassions...

Re: Would you ever take a day off to extend an already long weekend?
In NYC I believe you can be docked. My principal does not mind if it's once in a while. But there are people who do it regularly, which I think is really unfair.
I did it this past weekend for the first time- DH had a conference and I'd planned to go before I realized that it was a double holiday weekend.

Re: Would you ever take a day off to extend an already long weekend?
I would never....well, never say never. If I were sick, it would be a different story.
But I think it sends a bad message to the kids.
A colleague of mine took off - first year teacher.... just to make it a long vacation. It was really frustrating because all of us had to cover his classes. I just think it was pretty unprofessional of him.
Maybe he just doesn't know...?

Re: Would you ever take a day off to extend an already long weekend?
Last year my DH was the BM in a destination wedding Sat AM, the first day of a vacation. We both had to take the day before the vacation in order to get to the wedding on time. We both had our days approved by the administration.
I don't make a habit of it, but if the circumstance arises I do it.

Maybe he didn't- when I was student teaching a first year teacher took the Friday before winter recess off. I remember a few of the other teachers commented on it. But though I didn't know this teacher all that well, I would have been surprised to find out that she was aware of the policy. (And at that school, I don't even know if it was an actual policy or more of an unwritten rule/agreement.)

Never, unless there was an emergency, death in the family, or I was seriously very sick.

Wow.. I must be a slacker.. b/c my answer is YES!
I haven't ever done it.. and I've been teaching for a few years.. but I definitely would if I planned on going away or something.

Re: Would you ever take a day off to extend an already long weekend?
In my untenured days I came in the day before Thanksgiving with laryngitis. I couldn't say a word, but I was there!
Seriously my district makes a big deal about stuff like that. I have tenure now, but would be VERY hesistant to do it.

Re: Would you ever take a day off to extend an already long weekend?
I typically wouldn't do it to extend my weekend. It is really frowned upon in my school and I don't have tenure yet.
However, last year I took 2 days off before April break because I was getting married that weekend. Since it was such a big event, they had no problem with it. If i just did it to go on vacation, they prob would have been ******!

Same here. I will say that now that I'm down in Florida, a lot of people do it - it's not viewed the same way, but there's also not the same tenure system. But when I was working on LI, no way would I have done it unless it was an emergency. Two years ago, DH's grandmother died and we had to go down to Florida. It fell on a long weekend because of Yom Kippur and I was going to be missing another day besides that. My principal had to speak to the supt's office to have it cleared and make sure they knew it was a legit emergency.
