Wow.. I must be a slacker.. b/c my answer is YES!
I haven't ever done it.. and I've been teaching for a few years.. but I definitely would if I planned on going away or something.
i must be too. I feel they are my days to be used who really cares how I use them. I have never done this but feel like it really isn't a big deal. As far as sending a message to the kids, they don't and shouldn't know what i am doing on my days off. For all they know I could be sick as does happen sometimes after a vacation day. There is no control over that. So, again I would if the circumstance arose. I should also note though that i am a chicken so it would have to worth it to againist my prinicipals or cities views. (not that i agree with them)

Re: Would you ever take a day off to extend an already long weekend?
When I worked in the City, on a Friday before a 3-day weekend, 25% or more of teachers would call in sick. I always hated those days, because I knew I was going to get a coverage. And coverages before 3-day weekends when the kids are already all excited and nuts? Painful. So I'd take off sometimes then too.
Now that I work in LI, at a school where teachers have respect for each other, and where I'm not tenured yet (let's be honest here!), I wouldn't dream of it.

They give us a hard time if we do this. I dont' think I would, unless I absolutely had to and was going away or something.
