Would you give your 11 yo. an Ipod?

... Or your 4 yo. a DSi?

My niece showed me her Ipod this past weekend and I'm thinking to myself, dang, your cellphone is better than my 2 yo. junk of a phone!

And her little bro, who's only 4, got a DSi!?

I won't think twice about it, if it didn't make the gifts I and others gave them seem so inferior. And of course, they didn't even bother thanking anyone for the Xmas gifts they got.

There was a thread recently where quite a few women from this site said they were giving their 3 and 4 year olds Ipod Touches for Christmas.

Did you mean Ipod or Iphone? Either way 11 is probably the average age if not behind as far as friends go ( doesn't mean I agree with it)

4 is a fine age for a DS. There are lots of great educational games geared towards that age group for it.

Yes, I meant Ipod Touch the phone... I'm so out of it with Apple products.

No I would not... why do they need all the bells and whistles at that age. I can see a phone for emergencies if they arent' with you but really...why does an 11 yo need access to email and internet on their phone? I dont' get it.. my poor son is going to hate me!!

itouch is an iphone without a phone

Heck I'm thinking of giving AJ my itouch since she plays with it more than I do! and she's 2! Joking Joking. We use it for flashcards in the car "truck" "car" etc. Letters, numbers, colors and shape recongition. Altho she has recently become aware of and loves Angry Birds (hubby's fault).

I don't see a DSi as an issue if its educational. I don't see the itouch as an issue either.

But I would probably hesitate at giving my 11yr old a phone.. but that's what I say today haha

I think 11 is a good age to have a phone amdpr am Ipod - I don't see the need for an 11 year old to be carrying around a $500 IPhone - but that's me.

I also dont' have a problem w/ a 4 year old playing the DS -

My ONLY issue with these things is when parents allow their kids to stick their faces in those things for HOURS - at the dinner table, at a family party - etc etc, and basically ignore everyone and everything around them -

I would definitely give my 11 year old an ipod. They like music . . . why shouldn't they be able to listen to it. At 11 I know I had a boombox LOL! This is an equivalent of a boombox.
As for the dS, I am not so familiar with it. . . but I am not sure. . .
But honestly, if the parents have the money to buy it. . . why not. Their kids. . . their choice!

I didn't read your entire post. I think the problem ur having is not the gifts they got. . .Its that they were ungrateful about other things. . . This I would not tolerate. At 11 and 4 they should take things gracefully. . . even if they don't love it! Maybe not 4. .. but DEFINITELY 11. If my child didn't even give a thank you to the person giving the gift, they might even loose their brand new ipod privileges. I dislike rude children!

DD#1 is 10, and she got an iPod touch for Xmas, No Phone though.
She got a DS when she was 4.
She takes great care of her things, so I knew she could handle it.

My 7 & 9 year old have iPod touches so yes I'd give an 11 year old one.

My 7 year old got a DSi for Christmas.

I don't know that I'd want to give a 4 year old one. I think my son was 6 before he was allowed to be on a video game. Just a preference on my end though. I feel like there is way too much gaming going in in their future.

for an iPhone, it all depends on if the plan was up, how much the phone is & how responsible they are. My kids aren't allowed to bring the iPod Touch out of the house without permission. They also know if they lose it, that's it. They have a better track record with their stuff than DH so I can't complain.

I would give ipod touches to an 11 yo. HOnestly my 3yo loves his dads!
My 6yo niece got one for her b-day.

As far as an iphone, for an 11 yo, I guess if you plan on them having a phone why not. My niece and nephew have had phones since that age not sure how I will feel when DS is 11 but at this point I think its a bit young.

And for the DS. I think I would buy my 4yo one. Honestly my 3yo plays video games by himself and although the DS is a bit advanced for him if I was going to upgrade his Vsmile in the next year or so why not get the DS which he will grow into...

Yes i would. He doesnt have his own, but My 2.5 year old is on our ipad constantly.

If I had the money sure. DS is only 15 months and like his mommy loves technology. I'd love to give him an IPad that we could use together but if I got one I don't think I'd share it!

An 11 year old, yes.

I know younger kids (5) who got iTouches for the holidays-- which I personally think is a little young, but I don't have a 5 yr old and know what they are into.

Sasha LOOOVES to play with the iPad, but that doesn't mean she gets her own. But there are a lot of educational games you can download-- so there is SOME benefit other than just cool, flashy toy.

My DS got a DSi for his 4th birthday. I wouldn't buy it but his cousins had it and he loved it so my mom wanted to get him one. I let her. he doesn't play it all that much. He has a Leapster2 as well, I don't see much difference especially if you choose your games wisely.

As for the ipod, I would. I have a walkman at that age and to me an ipod is not different than a walkman. You mentioned cell phone so maybe you meant iphone and in that case heii NO, but to each his own.

Ipod...yes. Iphone probably not.
I think 4 is a little young for a DS but it's not unheard of.
I guess overall I don't see the big deal with either.

My DD got an ipod touch at 9 years old, and she is awesome with it. She loves it and takes such good care of it.

My son is 4 and we got him a DSI for Christmas. And my nephew is 9 and got an iPod Touch for his Birthday.

Nothing wrong with either.

Yes, my 8 & 9 year old nephews both got Itouches this year.

Iphone, probably not. I don't think they need a phone.

And we got my niece a DS when she was 5 or 6.

Both seem age appropriate presents to me.

At 11 yo I would give an Ipod (mp3 player type) but not an Iphone (cell phone).

An Ipod is like the "new walkman". I got that MANY years ago at 11 yo myself.

A cell phone... no, not at 11 yo. Unless I thought my child would need it for safety.
