I agree that the iPod is the new Walkman - I don't really see why I wouldn't give it to my 11yo...and definitely younger.
I got the iPhone 4 for my birthday so I gave my 2.5 yo daughter my 3G - without the data plan it's basically the iPod touch. She can maneuver it like no one's business   The best part is that I get MY phone back! lol The iPad is another story...she still thinks its hers 
My sister gave her the Fisher Price XL for Christmas, which she also loves. We're an electronic age, I don't see why I wouldn't encourage her to learn how to use these devices...especially if she's curious about them.

I gave my 9 year old an iPod Touch for Christmas.. it's not a phone. I won't buy him a phone. He loves it.

Um.....yep....Actually my 3 year old got an Ipod Touch for Christmas...(He got a DSI XL for his 3rd birthday)
And...
His 11 (Almost 12) year old sisters each got an Ipone 4.
My kids loved each and every gift they got and thanked each family member appropriately without nagging. How on earth would it make the rest of the gifts they got seem inferior? My kids have been taught to be thankful for what they receive. They have taught that there is value in everything no matter how big or small.
They arent perfect by any means nor are they angels..and yes I want to pull my hair out of my head 1/2 the time. But Im doing the best I can to raise them right....

If I could afford to give the technology, I might, however I would be very upset, if my children didn't say thank you on their own by that age.

I don't care what others do, but I would say no to both.
My son is 4. DS is on the the list at all. Lincoln Logs, trains, books...no need for an electronic device.
Ipod touch for an 11 year old. no.
there is internet access. I would want my 11 year old sitting in a family room on a laptop where i quickly have viewing access.
I think 11 is young to have private internet access.

Yes I would. they are digital natives and this is how they navigate their world. why not start early in teaching research skills...even if it is to look up mickey mouse or justin bieber, etc
I remember how hard it was to get my dad to learn how to use a mouse - I hooked him on solitaire. Playing games is how we learn best.

I know most kids that age have phones now but I would get them a cheap phone.
I see nothing worng with an 11 year old having an ipod.

Ipod yes, iPhone or I touch no way! I see an ipod the equivalent of a walkman and I think kids should be encouraged to enjoy music. I would never allow an iPhone at that age. How can you moniter internet access??? I think its just asking for trouble.

My 4 year old has an iPOD. Granted it's a hand me down from when my husband got a new one, but I probably would have bought her one, anyway. She loves music, I'm a music teacher and musician and she uses it appropriately, takes care of it and appreciates it.
We all do what think is right with our children. Each kid is different, each circumstance is different and each parent is different.
If there's an issue with not being grateful, I see that as completely separate from the issue of receiving electronics as gifts.
