Would you leave a contractor home alone in your house?
We're having hardwood floors put down. DH and I cannot take off the day he can come. Would you let him stay in your house without you?? We're not sure how comfortable we are doing this.......Just wondering what everyone would do. TIA

Re: Would you leave a contractor home alone in your house?
it would depend on a few things...
where we found him?
recommendation - referral - then I would say it's fine
I don't recall my parents ever being home when we got work done on our house growing up - we even went to FL once when we re-did the kitchen
I leave my cleaning lady alone in the house for 6 hours

Re: Would you leave a contractor home alone in your house?
Depends on who.
I usually give my CAC guys access to the house because when my CAC isn't working properly I want somebody there ASAP.
And they aren't very reliable as to showing up at a particular time so it's just easier to give them access and have them come when they are ready (while I am at work) so I don't have to take an entire day off.

Re: Would you leave a contractor home alone in your house?
It really depends. If it was a Home Depot type person... yes, I would stay home or my husband would stay home. We had new carpet put in upstairs when we first moved in, neither one of us was able to stay home, but my FIL came out.
Two years ago we redid two of our bathrooms, talking total gut. The project took about 11 weeks from start to finish. No way my DH and I could have stayed home for 11 weeks to supervise. Heck, even during that time we went to Europe on vacation! With that said, he was referred to us by close family who had used him for alot of their own projects.

I probably have my folks stop by and check in if there was absolutely no way either of us could stay home.

Re: Would you leave a contractor home alone in your house?
Like the others said, it depends.
We had a friend of DH's boss do our crown moulding so we felt comfy leaving him and his guys in our home while we were at work. DH went to check on them twice each day.
We came home from work and didn't even know they were there (except for seeing beautiful new moulding every day ).
So, if you got a recommendation from someone or know the contractor personally then I think it's okay. If it's just someone from home depot, then i'm not sure i'd leave them.

Absolutely not. You never know with people and I certainly wouldn't want them to cut corners by me not being there.

Re: Would you leave a contractor home alone in your house?
No way. DH & I lived in an apt & the landlord did this...I was livid. This was all done w/out our knowledge.
Now that we have our house we make sure someone if not us then a family member stay.

Re: Would you leave a contractor home alone in your house?
Nope, not after I was robbed by my cleaning lady of a year. However most of our family members are contractors painters etc so if it was one of them then yes

Re: Would you leave a contractor home alone in your house?
My DH used to work on people's homes and I was always surprised when people he didn't know would leave him alone in their homes. Of course, I know he's trustworthy, but how did they? When he did work for people he knew or friends of friends it didn't surprise me as much.
I don't know if I would do this when we have a home unless it was someone we know very well.

Re: Would you leave a contractor home alone in your house?
DW and I have been discussing this since we are having major work done very soon. We are moving our fire-proof boxes to either MIL or BIL's house, and we have no cash or jewelry in the house. I trust the contractor, but he sub-contracts, so we'll have to see how things go. Most of his subs have worked with him for 20-30 years.
Since this is a 3+ month project, there's no way I can confine DW to the house with DC all day every day for 3 months, so there will definitely be large blocks of time when we aren't in the house.

I agree. I wouldn't trust a stranger alone in my home no matter how nice he or she seemed. Either myself or my husband would have to be there the whole time.

We are in the middle of a major construction that has started about 3 weeks ago and will continue for another 3 or so. We have no choice but to leave them here while we go to work.

Yes and I have. When we redid our kitchen, there was no way we could have stayed home. We used a trusted contractor that was recommended from a friend.
