Would you let your 10 year old

Walk with 4-5 friends from school a few blocks to the library?

Re: Would you let your 10 year old

That depends on time of day and how busy the streets are, but ultimately, probably not.

I do have a 10 year old son and I struggle with the "how much freedom" thing almost daily.

2:40 pm and streets are not that busy. I spoke to 2 of the parents that said yes. The girls have a project to do. DD has been begging for Instagram which I said no to. But I think I'm gonna let her do this one.

I wouldn't, unless the library was in a residential neighborhood on side streets that aren't busy. Why can't they do the project at your house? Or another child's house?

NO WAY!!!! I was driving today in Plainview, 3 kids were walking and the youngest kid ran into the street and almost got hit. He was about 10, the other 2 kids were a bit older. No way no way!!!!

I don't know what made this kid walk right into the street, the older ones stayed on the sidewalk. They are lucky the didn't have to peel the kid off the hood of that carChat Icon

Great question. The girls came up with it and none of te parents thought to suggest doing it at a home! We live in NE Queens btw.

See I don't get this. Should a 10 yo know how to cross the street!? Was he fooling around on purpose?

Re: Would you let your 10 year old

I wouldn't. Although DS is only 8 and it is difficult to imagine him in a couple of years, when he is walking with friends he gets so distracted talking that he is not aware of anything around him. I have to be behind him/them, telling them what to do and when to stop. And not only because of them (the kids), but specially because of others (strangers).

Honestly my first thought was that they wanted to go to the library to make social media accounts. That way their parents don't know about them.

Yes, I have a ten year old and yes I would. They need to learn to have a little independence. Soon they will be in middle school. I would discuss all the rules and dangers first, then I would check on them along the way secretly. LOL

Would you let your 10 year old

Depending on the maturity of my child and what he/she is capable of, I would.

I try to give my DS as much independence as I know he can handle but every kid is different. My SS at 10 wasn't ready for this, he was doing this at 12 but my DS I think would be able too. However, my DS is only 5 now so who knows if this will be the case.

Interesting. I don't think you can create an acct on a PC anymore. At least 2 of these girls are already on IG. And walking to the library wouldn't be a recurring thing for now so if DD did this she wouldn't be able to access it otherwise.

Thanks this is what my gut says. She doesn't get to socialize much outside of school and I think this will be good for her.

I would let her as long as I was comfortable that she could cross the streets safely, etc. It makes me more comfortable that there are other friends with her.

Kids need to have independence at some point! This seems like a good way to introduce some freedoms.

Instrgram isn't available on computers I don't think.

Also, social media accounts don't just exist on the computers. So technically they could that at a friends house, other parent etc.

To answer the OP, yeah I probably would let my kid go at 10 to the library as along as you are comfortable with the neighborhood, etc.

Re: Would you let your 10 year old

It would all depend on the type of street but my 10 yr. old is going to have to walk to middle school next year and he will most likely be by himself. I would not have a problem with a bunch of friends.

Kids can not learn independence if we don't give them a little bit every year.

Would you let your 10 year old

I have a 10 year old and no I can't see myself allowing him to do so...I'm such a "what if" person and right now no I'm not ready.
It's not him I worry about it's the people out there now a days the creeps I worry about...the cars that drive like maniacs and jump a curb...call me a worry wart (which oddly I'm not in any other circumstance I'm pretty laid back parenting wise) but I would rather my kid be pissed at me lol.

I have a very responsible 9.5 year old DD and I would not let her walk to the library alone at this age. More fear of everyone else out there then her behavior. Maybe we are too conservative but I am just now letting her ride her bike around 1 block with another friend, and I wait outside for them to return.

Should? Maybe. The three of them were distracted and chatting. They looked one way and kept walking. The older 2 saw the car coming and halted. This kid was suddenly in front of the car!

So should, of course. What they really do is another story.

It depends on a few things
The route they have to take being most important.
Also who the other kids are.
DS is 10 and we are trying to give him more independence. It's not easy!

Let us know how it goes. I think I need a kick in the a$$ when it comes to cutting the cord! Like someone else said, it's more about everyone else and not so much about my kid. I can't control the unknown and that scares me.
