Re: Would you let your 6 year old SON get a manicure??

john got a mani in May (because he was in a wedding). He said "Mommy I dont want to go back, its a girls store"

My husband gets mani's every time he gets a haircut.

Not like the kid was getting pink nails with an airbrush design, just cleaning up his nails.

I would...it's just a manicure. They're just cleaning up and shaping the nail...not painting them a color. Nothing wrong with having nice nails.

I don't see why not, DH has gotten mani's with me before. It's not like there putting polish on, it just cleans them up and makes them a little softer.

I don't have a son - but if I did - I wouldn't allow him to get manicures at 6 years old......or never for that matter. I don't see the purpose in it at all.

Its just me - my opinion

I'm not flaming, but a lot of professional, straight, masculine men get manicures

I would so let my son get a mani if he wanted one.

My DH actually got one for our wedding so his nails looked nice.

And I agree I know plenty of professional men, straight men, who get manicures.

absolutely not. Its so stupid, I know, but I totally play into the gender roles thing. It bothers me when DS plays with my makeup brushes while Im getting ready.

I know that you do things your way, and I do things mine, but I really have to Chat Icon at this in 2009. JMO.

I just asked my 6yo DS, and he said no, he didn't want a mani, so no, I wouldn't take him to get one... Chat Icon

How cute! Sure, if he wanted it and enjoyed it, why not.

I don't think it will have too much impact on his sexuality.

I dont really see what is to Chat Icon about in "2009". I dont want my son having his nails done. I dont think its going to affect his sexuality, but hes a boy and IMO, no matter what the year is little boys dont need to get their nails done.....at least thats how I feel for my son. I also dont buy him dolls. I dont think playing into gender roles makes me outdated or close minded, it just makes me traditional.Chat Icon

Re: Would you let your 6 year old SON get a manicure??

I don't see anything wrong with boys getting manicures. However at 6 yrs old, I don't think a boy OR a girl should be getting manicures, unless it's for special occasions. JMO

Probably not b/c I would never hear the end of it from DH - I pick my battles as far as gender specific stuff and this one I don't feel strongly enough to fight for Chat Icon

But I wouldn't take him with me...that's my time Chat Icon

This would be my deal too.

I wouldn't get him a mani because he wouldn't be with me and I know my son and as soon as a strange woman tried to touch him he would freak out!!Chat Icon

I will say I wouldn't take Jaidy to get one either. I am not a fan of strangers touching my children. I do however give her pedicures myself all the timeChat Icon

Re: Would you let your 6 year old SON get a manicure??

I wouldn't mind if I was getting one and he got one too to keep him occupied.

However, I know DH would mind a lot. He'd be upset at me if DS grew up going to the spa to get mani/pedicures.

Re: Would you let your 6 year old SON get a manicure??

Honestly? Yes but under a couple conditions. Number one I wouldn't take him with me. Number two, if he wanted one so bad, I'd let his father take him. He should see that it is ok for MEN to have them done. My DH gets manicures and pedicures. I wouldn't want a salon full of opinions making my son feel uncomfortable forcing me to open my mouth and spew expletives in front of my child. If someone wants to mock my son in front of my DH who is built like an NFL linebacker, knock yourself out!

Re: Would you let your 6 year old SON get a manicure??

If he was with me, If he wanted one knowing what it entailed and was comfortable with it, sure! Why not? Its like getting your hair cut. It has no impact on his sexuality. If he is gay, he is ALREADY gay, whether or not I have someone else cut his nails nicely. It is my role as parent to support his curiosity and never make him feel ashamed to do something different. It builds confidence and individuality in this cookie cutter world I dragged him into. As long as he is not hurting himself or others and its within my means, Cailen can have access to anything. Any experience to learn about his likes and dislikes to become the most well rounded, confident, self assured and open minded man he can possibly be. Lord knows we need more of them out there.

Re: Would you let your 6 year old SON get a manicure??

Chat Icon 1. I am grossed out by nail salons in general so that would be a no.
2. this boy still gets homemade haircuts from his cheap as hell mom...so that would be a no.

If I were at a super clean one, had extra cash to throw away and he wanted one, I would let him. I would not encourage it though.

my dad is so far from being a manicure guy, so is DH. so male manicures is already unfamiliar territory for me. But I would never tell my kid no on a basis of he's a boy.
