yes, i would offer - but honestly i'd be surprised if anyone i know accepted!

Same here.

If I were the one speeding, though, I wouldn't expect anyone to pay for my ticket.

Re: Would you offer to pay?

in the situation Marie was in, YES!!

And I won't post to much of the story, but she was keeping within 5 miles of the speed limit, and the speed limit had just dropped, and she began slowing down. The cop even knew it and told her to go to court, he would help her Chat Icon

there is so much more to the story, but Marie was completely going out of her way for this girl, the girl took a flight to a VERY far away airport for horrible reasons, and left her friend with a new baby to drive her hours away at 5am!! in this situation, Of course I would, knowing I am putting my friend out, and she wasn't speeding.

If none of that was the case, and my friend was speeding for no good reason, I probably wouldn't. But then again, I would never choose an airport 4 hours away, and make my friend with a new baby have to drive me there at 5 in the morning. NEVER!

Re: Would you offer to pay?

I would if they were speeding to make my flight. I would if, say they were kind of moving with traffic, and the cop was busting chops. I would not if that person regularly drives way over the speed limit, in which case I would probably tell them to slow down anyway.

something somewhat similar happened to me- we took dh's neice away for the weekend- she's 10- and we went through a checkpoint and she wasnt wearing her seatbelt- even though we had just finished telling her to put it on when we got in the car 5 minutes before- anyway, I got a ticket- I expected my sister in law at least to offer.... I would never have taken the money.. she didnt and it bothers me

anyway, long story short, I would offer

See that pizzes me off that she didn't offer. Your niece directly disobeyed your instructions and broke a law which resulted in you getting a ticket. If I was the mother, I would have paid and then taken it out of my daughter's allowance!Chat Icon

Re: Would you offer to pay?

Honestly, if someone was driving me, I would make it clear that I did not want/need them to speed to get me somewhere and I would remind them to slow down if they were speeding for my benefit. If they are comfortable speeding and do it often, and they just happen to get pulled over while driving me somewhere, thats not my fault or responsibility since they just as easiliy could have been pulled over the day before and gotten the same ticket.

In YOUR case (from what was posted) if I was your friend I would have hired a car service since getting there is obviously a HUGE inconvenience - especially for a friend with a baby. Its one thing to ask a friend to sacrifice an hr or even 2 hrs of their time, but at 5am I *personally* would not ask any more of someone.

It was very nice of you to do that favor for your friend - you are a better person than me. Sorry you got a ticket and I hope the cop does "help you out" Chat Icon

Given these circumstances, is anyone shocked that the friend hasn't offered to help pay?

Out with a baby at 5 am? no no no no no no. But, live and learn.

Marie is a good person (and I don't even know her). I hope something happy happens to you today!

Re: Would you offer to pay?

in this case- 100% YES

before I even got out of the car I would have given the money

in most cases- I would say no- if you are doing 80 on the belt parkway to get me to the airport when I was late- yes

but if you are doing 80- I have plenty of time and I am yelling at you to slow down- no

for all the people that said "yes" or "absolutely" can you explain why?

My theory is that most people drive faster than the speed limit unless it's a guy weaving in & out of traffic & driving beyond what I drive, I would feel responsible.

If they weren't driving me to the airport, they wouldn't have gotten the speeding ticket to begin with.

Agreed. She doesn't sound like someone who would be considerate enough to hire a car service, why would she care about your ticket? Next time, just say no. Chat Icon

To answer the original question, no one can make you speed, five mph is still speeding and if the limit went down it was at least 10mph over. I wouldn't offer to pay because everyone has their own personal responsibility to consider, but I also wouldn't drive someone 4 hours to an airport at 5am! Chat Icon

I once had to drive from Port Jeff to get my friend to the Long Beach train station in under an hour. We made it, but if I HAD gotten a ticket from the Long Beach Police that followed me all the way down Park Avenue, (30mph! ahhh!) I'd never dream of expecting my friend to pay for the ticket, or to offer. Not in a million. My hands, my feet, my car, my responsibility.

Re: Would you offer to pay?

I would have probably offered gas money or a small thank you for taking me to the airport, but I wouldn't offer anything because of the ticket. I'd feel bad that they got it helping me, but in the end, I didn't ask anyone to speed.

ETA: I just read the whole situation. I wouldn't even be in that position to begin with because I would've hired a car service! I wouldn't aske a friend with a young baby to drive to an airport that far away at that time! You're a really good friend & I'm sorry about the ticket Chat Icon
