Re: would you pay for car seat installation?
yes I would pay- in a heartbeat- the stat that someone posted is completely correct- close to 90% of car seats are installed incorrect. You may think you know what you are doing- but you probably don't.
That said, I think that price is completely outrageous. When I had my seat inspected it literally took 15 minutes for them to fix it then take it out to show me how to do it properly. So I'd probably pay like up to $60 but not more than that

no. this is a free service done by the county. i would not pay someone especially that much! that is nervy of him to charge that much
Ditto. But hey, if he has people willing to pay him, more power to him. I just hope he's a certified tech.

Re: would you pay for car seat installation?
I'm a freak when it comes to car seats. I know how to install it myself and I install it well....but I STILL have it inspected (for free)....and if I had to pay to have it installed, I absolutely would. But only by a certified tech, not some random person.

No way. When I took the car to get the infant ca seat inspected at the fire house they actually took it out and reinstalled it for free!
Beware that just b/c you brought it to the firehouse, doesn't mean it's been installed properly unless it was installed by a certified tech, which most firefighters are not. My cousin is a high up at the fire dept, and is constantly installing car seats for people and when he came to NC he told me I had my sons straps wrong. He said they needed to be above his shoulders. Well he was dead wrong, my son was still RFimg and when RFing they need to be at or below. Just goes to show, how they can be giving out misinformation.
This information is in the carseat manual though.

Re: would you pay for car seat installation?
I Paid someone to come to me. He installed 2 car seats and charged me $70 total I think. I actually had to have him come twice because I had to take the car seat out and couldn't install it properly myself. Worth every penny in my opinion. Though I don't think I would have paid $150 for someone to come to me.

I would pay but, not that much. I think that amount would make people NOT want to get their seats inspected.

Re: would you pay for car seat installation?
No way. We take ours to Hassell and they install them for free. And they show us the proper way to install them if we need to take the seat out and put it back in. (Most times we just head back to Hassell since it's close by).
We have been there countless times for my car, my DH's car and my mother's car. All 3 cars currently have 2 carseats each in them.

Re: would you pay for car seat installation?
I agree that it may be important to have the carseat properly installed due to all the statistics, however, this is a free service offered by many professionals ... this is the site that was rec to me by Winthrop Hospital. Just look up a location close to your zip code and make an appt. http://www.nhtsa.gov/cps/CPSFitting/index.cfm If I had to pay for it, I would, but that fee is ridiculous!

Same here. I called one place and they wanted to charge me to come to me. It was hard in the winter finding somewhere but was able to with research.

Re: would you pay for car seat installation?
as a first time mom i was willing to pay because i had a hard time finding someone open in the winter to do it for free...but it turns out the firehouse did a free installation one weekend so it worked out perfectly.
however, if i did need to pay, there is no way i would pay $150 or even $75. that's way too expensive

Nope, I wouldn't pay for that service. That's waaaaaay too expensive to click a seat into LATCH and secure it, IMO. He's charging just as much as an actual carseat. They really aren't that hard to install properly, I can't see paying for someone to do it for me.
Statistically, close to 90% of car seats are not installed or used properly. So, not as easy as you may think!!
This is not actually true. The statistic is that 90% of parents felt confident that they had installed the car seat or booster correctly. Not all of them had actually installed them incorrectly.

WHAT???? No - Do you have any idea how many times I've taken those things in and out of my cars? How difficult is it to read the seat manual & your car's manual - it's not neuro surgery!
And that statistic about 90% being installed 'incorrectly' .......I'd like to know what was wrong w/ those installations........were the 1/8 inch not level?

Re: would you pay for car seat installation?
Because the service is available for free, no, i would not pay for it
however, if it wasn't available, then a small fee seems reasonable.
$150? yeah, good luck with that

I work at a company that does car seat checks at some of our events and I have seen some crazy things over the years- like using both belts and the latches to hold the seat...
you also have to factor that this includes expired seats, people who put their child front facing when they should be rear (have seen people put the infant seat ff).
and maybe some of them are just slightly wrong but in a crash, I think I'd rather it be 100% correct than even an 1/8 off

Don't take this the wrong way but with latch system I really can't imagine why anyone can't look at the manual and do it themselves. I can totally understand having it get checked at your firehouse etc. if you're nervous but the installation is very simple.
ITA! I wouldn't pay anyone to do it... What makes him more qualified than me or my DH? Also, does he gaurantee his work, God forbid something bad were to happen to a child in a seat he installed...can be be sued..,I hope he thought this through bc some people are crazy!
However, I'm sure there are some people that are either too nervous or too lazy to read the manual and DIY.
ETA: I have a family and friends full of cops and firemen, I asked them all and NONE or them have recieved any special training to install car seats...and our fire dept does not have any techs...

I have heard many car seat techs state that statistic.
Car Seat Lady Video- she states the 90% misuse statistic at 1:42 mark in the video

*Misuse also constitutes the straps being too loose, coming above the shoulders when the should be below, the chest clip at the belly, etc. A tech will show parents all of these things!
*Many people use the latch & the seat belt thinking it provides extra protection.
*They'll use after market products
*They'll place a car seat in the center when it doesn't have latch and attach it to the latch connections on the outboard seats. A lot of cars & a lot of seats do not allow latch borrowing.
*They forget to tether
*I've seen someone use a bungee cord as a rear tether on a seat that doesn't have one or allow for one
*too loose of an installation- the seat should not move more than 1 inch either way
And the list goes on....

No, I wouldn't pay for that service. There any places you can go for free to install the carseat. If you call your hospital they will also take a look at the carseat to make sure it is installed correctly, at least I know LIJ does.

Re: would you pay for car seat installation?
Absolutely not. I went to the State Troopers in Farmingdale and they did it for free and showed us how to install as well. They even show you how to properly buckle the baby in. I got a Saturday appointment with no issue. It just took a week for them to call me back to make the appointment. Hassell Auto Body also does it for free during regular business hours, no appointment needed you just have to call and make sure the woman who does it is there that day.
