Honestly, I think $150 is pretty pricey!
If I were you, I would make it yourself! Partly, for selfish reasons
that was just for the 10 inch :( and I feel bad b/c the cake is really good from this place but that is just too much dinero right now.
are you guys coming?
Nancy, talk to me. I love the idea of it going to charity....
Jess...you guys are awesome. you made me smile. seriously.
I work for The Doe Fund www.doe.org We are nonprofit that helps formerly homeless men get back on their feet through paid work. One track they can get licensing is in Culinary Arts. We serve 1000 meals a day all made from scratch from the culinary arts trainees. They cater for the mayor and Steve Madden. Their pastry section is AMAZING--they made Ethan's Christening cake. More like homemade/ Crumbs less like Italian pastry shop. Have them do it. It could be a part of their course. Would cost you pennies. I think they charged me 42 bucks for a sheet cake that served 100. chocolate wit fresh raseberry filling. EVERYONE loved it. And your dollars would go to support the program.

I would and have but it's not necessary and if you're going to feel guilty then I say not to do it.
Same! I agree that if you are going to be stressing over it then do what you can afford. Your guest will be happy no matter what.

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
I would ALWAYS prefer a homemade cake to a bakery cake, any day, any time, any place. Anyone who can make a homemade (or even a box homemade) cake is my god who I will openly worship.
Bakery cakes... blech.
ETA: I have spent that much - and more - on occasion cakes because I can't bake worth a lick. If I could, well then I WOULD!!!!

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
If you've already stretched yourselves for other things, then i think the cake has to go. Seriously..I doubt anyone will think anything about the cake. Everyone loves cake, no matter what the frig the decorations look like on it. And its $150 that will be sliced into and not even look pretty for more than 5 minutes.
(I spent $200+ on a Mets cake for DH's 30th a few years ago..it was beautiful. we all admired it at the restaurant and then the waiters came and chopped it all up..LOL. I think i could have lived without spending that $$.)
U think Luce will remember he had a fancy cake..no.
Im not even having a big party like I originally booked at bounce -u. I cancelled that b/c funds are tight and i wouldnt have enough kids. So my aunt is having us over the week before for a little party and then a small party at my house the week after. the people that matter will be there to celebrate with DS.
thats really all that matters. Not a $150 cake.

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
I just spent $100 on Santino's cake but that was a splurge for us and I would not have went any higher(plus I had the party at home and it was one of the only things I really did that was theme related and our gift to him was the party). I know you have so many cute things going into this party and if I were you I would make the cake and not spend that money. Homemade cakes are the best anyway and you are a great cook

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
I would and I have spent more than that. But, I do it for me - I love having a special and unique cake - and I don't think it's a waste of money b/c a cake is one of the centerpieces of the party and it something you remember always. And, I am NOT a baker
That said, if the $150 was in ANY way a struggle for me there is NO way I would spend it just on a cake ESPECIALLY if only to make other people happy! I hope they are traveling that 80 miles to celebrate your son and his first birthday - THAT is what the party is all about - and, if they are expecting more - that is just ridiculous - let them spend the $150 for their bday!!!! Honestly, if it was a stretch for me financially in any way - i wouldn't think twice about nixing it

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
I could never justify a $150 cake..just seems like such a waste to me. I got a $15 BJ's cake for DD's birthday...it was delicious and the design was cute. did it match my theme? no but NOBODY but me noticed. Every single person told me how good it tasted and thats all the matters to me in the end.

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
See this adorable Barbie cake? I paid $35 for it from Waldbaums back in June for Ava's birthday. Believe it or not, I STILL have people RAVING about it to me. Just the other day someone mentioned it to me! From WALDBAUMS! Do not think for a moment that there is something wrong with not getting some ridiculously expensive cake. I never spent more than 35 bucks on a cake for Ava and each and every one of them has been special. Anyone who loves you enough to travel to your son's party will not be judging you for the kind of cake you have for him. In fact, I made Ava her first birthday cake because I wanted it to be from ME, not from a bakery. I made it with love and that was so important to me.

Make your own cake. You are an amazing chef and the love and care you put into this party says that it is first rate. 150 IMO is a lot!

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
No way!! lol... I almost gave in for DS christening for about that price...but then DH talked me out of it. Since then (only 2 months ago LOL) I have taugh myslef to decorate cakes all pretty. I always loved to bake, but much like everyone else said, I was horrible at icing. I find using tips and those plastic bags make it easier and neater. Just gotta play around with it some. I can't wait to make the next cake...I may make one for halloween just for practice LOL. Also, I learned how to work with fondont all on my won as well... made fondont cookies in the shape of crosses. Everyone raved from them. You Tube works wonders for me. Plus, all in all if you do it all yourself, at most you'll spend about $10 if it's all from scratch!! HTH!

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
I went to our favorite bakery for DD's birthday cake--when they told me $115 I walked out and went to Costco. For $17 it fed 50 people and was damn good.

For those who do buy cakes but don't buy at Costco, where are you getting them at low prices? I thought that a lot of cakes are up there in price.

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
I made the cakes for DS's party. When it was all said and done, the pans, wilton tips, frosting, dye and everything else added up to close to the number you are grappling with! Baking a cake may not save you much money at all, but for me it was VERY important to make it for him myself. I know you enjoy cooking so even though it may not be cost effective, I would go the bake your own cake route.
IMO a homemade cake is way more impressive than something anyone can pick up at the store.

Take a picture of the theme to BJs, For $20 they will scan it onto a 1/2 sheet cake and it will look fantastic and taste good too.
$20. For the whole cake. Best deal going and custom.
And, when I go to a party at someone's home, regardless of the invite, I expect it to be warm and cozy and homey. Homemade food is worth the $80.
I agree, especially about the BJ's cake....their cakes are delicious!!!

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
It's a kid's birthday party. I'm not there for the cake. I'm there for the kid & the family to celebrate. Nothing more.
Would I spend $150 on a birthday cake? All depends on how many people it serves. I've spend over $200 on a cake before.
I wouldn't think twice if you made a homemade cake. I have a friend who has made her own cake every year for her daughter's birthday. I think it's a great idea.

Re: would you spend $150 on a birthday cake?
Wow! I had no idea cakes cost so much!
My family has always had Costco cakes (YUM) or Carvel cakes with the image screened on for events if a cake isn't already included like it was for our wedding and e-party.
I don't think I'd spend $150 on a 1st birthday cake - I'd probably go the costco route and consider asking them to do smooth buttercream and decorating it myself, or the DoeProject route another poster suggested.
