Would you think this was cute or would you feel insulted?
So, last night we went out to dinner with Scott's family. We were sitting in the restaurant and his sister turns to her 5 1/2 year son and says, what's Uncle Scott's wife's name? After a few seconds of hesitation, he couldn't answer and they laughed and thought it was cute. I went along with it, but I thought it was pretty sad considering we have been married for almost 2 years.
BTW- his sister lives about 20 minutes from us. It just proved my point that we are not close to them.

I think the SIL was a jerk for setting that one up. I would never say that to my kid. In fact you say "You remember Aunt so&so"

Well, then they made him go around and say everyone's name including mine. I thought it was awkward. I also told Scott that I am tired of the fakeness and evryone acting like they are so close. I told him it takes too much energy.
My family is very different. My family always include Scott's dad for BBQs and holidays. I am very close to my nephews and couldn't imagine NOT seeing them all the time.

I'd be insulted, if the child doesn't know why bring it to light? And I agree with the person that pointed out that you remind the child of Aunt so and so. Is it possible that the child is shy and knows your name but doesn't say it? My niece will do things like that because she gets very shy and doesn't want to answer a question. But, I still don't see why the mother asked the question.

No, he really couldn't remember. Then when they asked him again he said Aunt....and then his sister started saying Aunt DDDD.... for him to get it.

Well if you know that you aren't close with them then i don't think i could be offended...
At least not by the fact that the kid couldn't rememeber your name
but that people thought it was something to laugh at....the adults....well that i would find rude

I'm not upset at his nephew at all. I am more upset at the fact that they don't include us in their lives.

I would be totally insulted!! My niece and nephew aren't even 2 and they live in MD and then know my name!
Actually, more than insulted - I would be totally annoyed to have to deal with the obvious fakeness that is going on!

Scott made a comment when she did this- he said oh- were such a close family.
I guess I am just insulted that his sister did this. After Scott's mom got sick and passed away his sister said we got so close with everything we went through. On Scott's side of the family they really is only his dad, myself and Scott. His brother lives in Virginia. We are NEVER invited to his sister's accept for b-days and holidays. We are both teachers and she spends her summers at the beach club. Not once has she ever asked me to go. I have attempted to have a relationship by inviting her to the house and for a girls night in. But I told Scott I'm done.

My thoughts EXACTLY ! My SIL (whos been married to my brother 2yrs also) is one of very little words, doesnt do much socializing or interacting like most of the big mouths in the family  so my boys often call her the name of a friend of ours (whose husband I used to work with  ) they do look alike, but I felt so bad once that they know a coworkers wife's name quicker than their AUNTS name so I quickly try not to draw attention to it, and I constantly say "Hi Zia Jenn" and I mention her name all the time and ask them a million questions like "tell Zia Jenn thank you for the cookies" etc etc. So it gets into their head... kids do remember those that interact with them more  (not to say anything against you, Im just saying, maybe its your SILs own fault that her kids are not around you enough.) you did nothing wrong, and I would have been insulted too

why would your sil want to make you feel bad on purpose?
I don't know if this helps but a friend's son for what ever reason referred to his grandmother as "This". He would call everyone else by name but in his world grandmother = this.
