I agree. Very wrong to make both you and the kid feel stupid in front of everyone.

I can't say I'd be mad but I might express my feelings to the SIL. Maybe say that you'd like to see your nephew more often.
My 3 year old neice and 5 year old nephew (DH's brother's kids) have called me Aunt Patti (or some variation of it) since they could talk.

It depends. If I spent a lot of time with them, I would be insulted. But I wouldn't expect a 5 year old to remember me if I didn't spend that much time with them. Don't get mad at the mom, she probably didn't mean it in a malicious way. If anything, I would take it as a sign that both couples need to make more of an effort to spend time together. If you don't care about spending time with his sister, then why be insulted?

I know how you feel. My youngest brother doesn't have anything to do with us. He's sort of adopted my SIL's family as his and they are the only one's that are important to him. He doesn't remember my kids birthdays', my other brother and his children, our parent's birthdays and anniversary, etc. However, he remembers all his wife's nieces and nephews special days. That's just him to be a jerk!

hes just a little kid- i think they laughed it off because they didnt know what else to do

Sounds like my DH family- they drive me nuts. I would be angry for they poor 5 year old- not insulted. What an idiot.
