Would you travel to Europe with a One Year Old?
My mother is OBSESSED with sending DH and I to Europe. I told her that I would do a Med. cruise because I thought that would be easier with a baby than an actual tour.
She really wants us to go next summer. Jack will just be turning one. If I don't go next summer then I will need to listen to my mother bug me for another year....and I may also get pregnant soon after which means that I wouldn't go for another few years....which just means more bugging me from my mom.
Am I crazy to think that it's doable with a one year old? It would be a 7 night cruise - and we would fly into Barcelona.
What do you think?

I'm actually trying to convince DH to do the same thing next year- DS will be about 20 months. I think it's doable. I have friends who have done more touring trips with a baby, so I would thikn a cruise would be even easier.

Re: Would you travel to Europe with a One Year Old?
I think a med. cruise with a one year old will be fine. You can pick and choose which excursions you want to go on....and even if it's just walking around the towns, you can head back to the boat whenever your DC has had enough.
I think it's a great way for you to see Europe with your child, because you have the comforts of a hotel, while on the go....you don't have to sit in cars or trains for hours and hours just to get to another city.
I say, go for it!

Re: Would you travel to Europe with a One Year Old?
I would do it.
Most of Europe is incredibly baby friendly and you can buy anything that you can get in the states in EUrope. I would agree that a cruise is a good idea as you will have a base. My one worry about travelling would be the sleeping arrangements, which is where a cruise would be great.
A lot of my friends take their small children abroad for weekends away and they say that it always goes really well.
I went to Barcelona a few years ago and I was amazed at what a child friendly city was! I say do it!!

Diana DO IT!!!
My best friend just moved to Sicily and my parents are offering to send me and DS (DH can't get off work) in November to see her, and I am pretty sure I am going to do it if I can get DS' passport taken care of in time!
We are cruising (Mexico and Belize) with DS in January and I am totally looking foward to it.
ETA: DS will be 6 months in November and 8 when we cruise. The kid has already been to Florida, he is a traveling maniac

My 19 month old has already been to America 3 times...

Re: Would you travel to Europe with a One Year Old?
I think you girls convinced me to do it. It looks like an amazing trip and it would be an all expense paid trip....what's better than that?!
I told my mom to call the travel agent. I'm getting excited now (too bad it's a year away)

I would definitely do it!!!
IMO, your better off going on a cruise!! A tour can be hectic since you will be traveling on train & bus and will have to carry all of your belongings PLUS Jack....
I cant wait to bring DS to Italy to meet my family!!!

just look into what you need for a child travelling abroad with one parent - i think i read somewhere that you need something with DH's permission to leave the US? worth checking out

I am a true believer that you can basically do anything with a baby and your limitations are really only set by yourself. So I say go for it!

Re: Would you travel to Europe with a One Year Old?
I went on a med cruise last summer out of Barcelona too, and there were a TON of babies on the cruise. I say do it! The worst part will be the long flight there. The cruise should be a blast!

Re: Would you travel to Europe with a One Year Old?
when DH and I went on our Med cruise out of Italy, there was a couple with a 18 month old. The only bad thing was the excursions were not kid friendly, they went on the capri excursion with us and there was no where to put the stroller, they had to carry it on this tiny bus and b/c the excursion goes by people how many fit on bus it was really uncomfortable for them stroller on his lap. Barcelona is easy though, you just walk around and the Gaudis church is easy to walk around with a stroller. Italy however if you are planning on doing site seeing to the Vatican, Basillica, etc forget it, not kid friendly at all. Maybe it depends what time of year too with the crowds we went in october off season and it was a madhouse.
But if you dont plan on doing any of that- DEF do it!!!!!

I would go! We are planning a cruise for early next year with Josh.
Our lifesaver has been our Kelty Backpack. Throw Jack back there and he will love it.

Re: Would you travel to Europe with a One Year Old?
We are going to London in April, just before his 1st b-day. We will be staying with my family though (the reason for the visit actually). I think it would be fine, just talk to your ped ahead of time about things like what to do for the ears popping on the plane, if he gets sea sick on the boat, etc.....

Re: Would you travel to Europe with a One Year Old?
Is it a tour or are you going around on your own and staying at hotels? I ask only because we were planning on going to Ireland last year and the tour company would not take an infant.
eta: I just reread your post and you want to do a cruise instead. Sorry!!!
I would definetly do a cruise!!!

That is if it is travel without a passport. Both parents need to go to the passport office to obtain the passport, then once you get it you are fine.
Thanks for the heads up though
