I would never wear red, ivory or white to a wedding.
could i ask why not red?
I guess no real reason other than I was once told by an older family member years ago you never wear red to a wedding because it is an 'attention seeking' color at a wedding. I know people on this thread don't think so, but that's just what I've always gone by.
Colors of Maroon or cranberry I would wear...just not a bright red.
And I did have someone wear white to my wedding...I noticed and so did other people. tisk tisk.
i grew up with the same kind of explanation from my family. My group of friends and I were discussing what they were going to wear to my wedding and when one of them said red, all the others had mentioned they wouldnt ever wear red to a wedding. It actually became a funny joke and she ended up wearing maroon, which was totally fine. Another guest wore a bright red BM-looking dress which just looked out of place, but I really didnt care...

Re: would you wear red to a wedding?
Yes I would and I have. Seriously no one is looking at anyone but the bride. Now, if you wore a red dress that was skin tight and up your c you next tuesday, then yes people would look at you and comment.

Re: would you wear red to a wedding?
I have on more than one occasion and I would again. Red is a fab color for a dress, and I love it.
Not wearing white is self-explanatory but I think someone overly sensitive made up the no red dress rule.

I like when people wear something besides black.....
i agree. granted, i wear black to weddings all the time bc it's easy and for sure i'm not offending anyone with my choice.
but i hate to see the guests seated and have it look more like a funeral when everyone starts crying, lol. this is why i love all the bright colors that show up at spring/summer weddings--purple, hot pink, turquoise, red, bright green, yellow, florals, etc

Re: would you wear red to a wedding?
Everytime I look at the title of this thread, I can hear Cher's voice saying "And when you're dead, I'll wear a red dress to your funeral." ala Moonstruck.
I'm not a red dress person but I would as long as it wasn't a "look at me!" type of dress. I think it goes without saying to not wear red if the bride or bridesmaids are wearing red

Re: would you wear red to a wedding?
Honestly I've seen girls come to wedding dressed like they were going clubbing...I think that is more bizarre than wearing a nice red dress to a wedding

I have never believed you can outshine a bride.. But.... In case the bride does I would stay away from it just not to offend anyone.

so did i! TWO people! one wore a white dress and the other wore a white pant suit
The catering manager at my venue wore a white suit! Blaring, bright white

Re: would you wear red to a wedding?
I would, and I have. The only way I would avoid red is if the bride's culture made it unacceptable (Chinese brides wear red and so do Indian brides I think).
Otherwise the only color I would avoid is white/cream/ivory etc.

Red is much more noticeable to the human eye than other colors like yellow or white. I learned then when I learned about the lights on emergency vehicles.
Tell me, which person in this picture do you notice first? My MIL in her red dress, or me in my white dress?
IMAGE
I'll just say this... She really stands out in the pictures. But that was her intent after all.
eta: Sunday afternoon wedding, well aware my family were wearing all floral prints or colors at my request, because I always wanted a "garden" wedding.
I was going to say it's okay unless your the MIL. I rest my case
I do think that years ago it was considered taboo.

Re: would you wear red to a wedding?
If I had a red dress that looked good on me I'd wear it to a wedding. I don't get the logic that it takes away from the bride... then that could be said of ANY bright color... so what should everyone do, where black or neutrals? of course not. I don't see a problem with it, as long it' not the bridal party color.

Re: would you wear red to a wedding?
I never heard of the no red thing... I just personally wouldn't do it because I wouldn't wear a red dress in general. To weddings, my norm is black.

Re: would you wear red to a wedding?
I wouldn't wear red to a wedding because I wouldn't want to stand out so much. JMHO. If it's a deep red, cocktail dress, then maybe. I just wouldn't wear an attention grabber gown or hot red number.

Re: would you wear red to a wedding?
I'd wear it. I truly believe that the only one that really stands out that day is the bride regardless of whatever colors anyone is wearing. I'd not wear red though to a traditional Chinese or Pakistani Wedding.

Re: would you wear red to a wedding?
Couldnt get this thread out of my head tonite; was at a wedding and a tiny older lady(late 60's/early 70's?) had on I kid you not, a fire-engine red sequin dress with matching jacket, matching shoes, and matching bag a-la Dortothy's red slippers!
She was so diminutive that she didnt really stand out, but in a way she did! Also she looked a little like Liza Minelli! I couldn't get over this outfit!
Some others wore maroon or burgundy and it was beautiful and tasteful. This woman was off the chain.
