Awww...how old is she? So sad to watch it happen.
I remember when my paternal grandmother was getting to that point she had lost all sense of day and night. She used to call my house at 4AM and when my dad would get out of bed and answer, she would very pleasantly say "so how are you? What are you doing?" Dad would tell her he was sleeping and tell her to go back to bed. She would hang up and call back two minutes later. It was funny and sad.
awww. yeah it is sad. she was referring to me as "jennifer" the other day and when i brought dh over she said "nice to meet you" even though she already has. she gets eveyrthing confused now.
shes only like 76 or 78 or something, but ever since her stroke shes been like this.
she speaks to us in french ALL the time now and when she does that we know shes about to have an "episode" as we call them.
eta: she doesnt have altzheimers (sp?) but something almost like it...dementia (sp?)

It definately is not funny, but my grandmother was the same way.
One day we couldnt find her, and we looked all over the house for her. We thought she went outside, looked everywhere.
We found her in the basement wearing a sombrero.
I just peed my pants typing this.

The woman I work with, her mother was Cuban and when she had alzheimer's she completely forgot how to speak english. She could only speak spanish.

So sad-but the sombrero part is awesome-at least she stillhave her ability to accessorize!

That happened to my former landlady too. She could only speak Italian. That is interesting how that happens. It is almost as they are reverting back to their younger years I guess.

You are right it absolutley helps when dealing with this..I have 1 grandma left and she is 93 ..up until a year ago she could live on her own, but she started getting confused and forgetful..so when I visit her now and she has a particularly confused day I get sad but she will come out with some funny stuff at times , and you just have to laugh..most of the time she is laughing too ... for you and your grandma......

Re: Wow, My Grandma is Going Crazy
My father had Alzheimers. He used to say some pretty funny things. It is important to be patient and understanding and try not to invalidate the words and feelings of those who suffer from it. It was horrible to watch his deterioration. Once he lost the ability to communicate effectively, he was unable to tell us of his physical ailments that, over many months, led to his passing. It is very serious.

Re: Wow, My Grandma is Going Crazy
I am sorry for what she is going through but I can relate. DH's grandmother has Alzerhimers and while it is sad it is funny at times. She told my BIL that their are plenty of beautiful girls in Croatia and he should go find one to marry. BIL has been married for 1.5 years and they have been together for a total of 7 years.
