I'm glad he apologized asap before it even aired. I know a few people who disabled family members who were very insulted by that remark. Hopefully this will be a lesson for a lot of people and know that words are hurtful. I should take that lesson I often have my foot in my mouth. I do think that if bush had said this people would of been really really pizzed off.

I don't agree. I consider myself a big Obama supporter- I also work with Special Needs children- I'm really annoyed he made that remark!! However, I am glad he apologized for it.
Also like to add Bush made many offensive remarks as evidenced
here

ITA-I love the way the media spins things. I am glad he apologized, but I hate how the media lets it just slide, whereas if Bush were to say it, you would hear about it for a month!

I was a supporter of him, and still am, but really was disappointed in his remark. I'm glad he apologized right away, but it definitely wasn't cool at all...
When you're live, in an entertainment setting, and everyone is watching, you better be extra careful on slip ups like that

Exactly!!!! Obama is the media's golden boy!
i was upset that he said that. he really offended a lot of people that he represents and a lot of people that voted for him.

It was wrong for Obama to say this and he quickly apologized, but how many times have we said something that was politically incorrect? yes yes i understand what he said and who he said it about was wrong but hes human and we all make mistakes or say stupid things.
He messed up he apoligized for it which seemed sincere. I dont think he honestly meant any harm and i belive he felt bad after saying it
I may get flamed for this but how many of u have said things like the "short yellow bus" or a "tart cart"? I hear people say things like this all the time, kids adults etc.
The reason im saying this is bc yes hes the President he should be extremly careful of what he says but hes human just like the rest of us and i dont know anyone whos perfect in every way.

I do appreciate he apologized and do realize he is only human but he is the president, he needs to be careful about what he is saying. I know he said it to be funny and not malicious at all but from someone who has a brother who is MR and participates in the special Olympics it is still offensive and I am disappointed

I mean I honestly can say I've never used those terms. I get insulted when I hear them. I just never found those things funny. I know too many people who have had disablitites to overcome. II just hope this is now something that people are more aware of. I mean I am all for cracking jokes but on things people can control like being a douche not on things people can't control like a disablitity.

I find it incredibly sad that you hear this all the time, especially out of the mouths of kids I think everyone could use a little sensitivity training in this area.

I couldn't agree more. I am really disgusted by the comment. This comment by any public figure would be bad enough-but by the President!!!!!!!
I also tuned into the Rachel Maddow show last night. She made note of Obama's media tour and how great of a communicator he was.... Many clips were involved but none of the Tonight Show incident!! How do you overlook that!!!

When people say stupid things like that even jokingly or out of anger (whether they apologize or not afterward) it makes me think that that's how they really are, they show their true face.
You know there is a saying where I come from "if apology was a pill, it would have been sold at the drugstores", you can't apologize and think that everything is fine(in some cases)
I don't mean just Obama, but in general.

ITA with this, I am an OBAMA supporter , however I am very sensitive about what people say about children/people with special needs. I would never make a comment like that b/c I don't feel that way at all, just makes ya think.
