Wow- that was harder then I thought!
so I am trying something new this week
pay cash for everything
I realized that by debiting things I was constantly going over budget (so instead of cutting back on anything- I wanted to try to stick to my budget)
so I just went to the supermarket
I shopped so differently knowing that I could only spend what was in my wallet

Re: Wow- that was harder then I thought!
I have been bringing coffee, cream, lunch & snacks to work for the last 3 weeks to see how much I can save...with the exception of yesterday's lunch and it was killing me to pay for lunch!
Last night I went home and made a huge thing of turkey chili!!!
Purchasing all the new things for our new apartment gets pricey! Those lunches cover shopping at HomeGoods!

Oh yeah!!!!! I find it's soooo easy to swipe and not think about what you are really paying. It's like it is "just a number"
When you pay cash - it's like "WHOA! That's MONEY coming out of my pocket!"

Re: Wow- that was harder then I thought!
I'm the exact opposite. With cash, I know I can spend whatever I have, because it's mine, and there won't be any interest. I'm a lot more leery about spending on my CC because I know that if I don't pay it off, I'm going to be accruing interest. Plus, I have a semi-permanent record of what I bought. With cash, it burns a hole in my pocket, and I often don't remember what I spent it on.....

I know right, we started paying cash for everything too and its amazing how fast it goes!! We really watch what we buy now when we go food shopping, before I would just throw anything in my cart, now I look at the prices.

Re: Wow- that was harder then I thought!
If I did that I would have to go to the ATM machine a lot more often and I hate having to drag DD into the bank for that.

Re: Wow- that was harder then I thought!
I am on a budget this week and so far so good. Its hard to write down everything that you spend. But I took out some cash last tuesday (£50) and I still have £5 left....so its a start.

Re: Wow- that was harder then I thought!
I changed my budget to cash only a year ago and what a difference it makes! I only do it for my allowance though. Not bills or shopping for the house.

interesting .... I've never tried doing that. I might give it a try though.
how much do you think you saved in a week by doing that? (you don't have to give a $ amount - maybe just a percentage)

Yes- it sure is!! However it teaches you a good lesson in spending disipline. It is painful, but in the end, you learn how to better manage your finances.

I only pay cash for any shopping, gas, etc. You have better control over what you spend by doing it this way.

Re: Wow- that was harder then I thought!
I keep a spending journal. I would be back and forth to the ATM all the time and sometimes not able to get to a Citibank ATM where there was no fee.
I think I would find it more of a PIA because of the cash issue and I don't like carrying a lot of cash on me.
Either way, it's a good way of keeping track.

it's hard to say- I give myself $100 for food shopping- and was spending any where from $130-$150, plus little trips at $20 to $30 here and there
Gas- I give myself $60- and that could be anywhere from $70- $80
as for other daliy expenses- I always paid cash for those (lunch, nails etc) I give myself $70 a week with a $25 swing amount (that goes into a day to day savings account at the bank)
what it did last night at the supermarket was force me to think- is this a need or a want- I am buying this b/c it's on sale or b/c I need it
everytime I g over- it has to come out of somewhere- and that somewhere is normally savings-

Re: Wow- that was harder then I thought!
I use cash for my weekly allowance and try to challenge myself to have $ leftover at the end of the week to put in savings. It's kinda fun in a crazy kind of way. It's really eye opening though to see how fast it goes!

I have a budget for everything and when I go food shopping, I use my paper and pen and make sure I don't go over the amount we have alloted. Last week I went over by a dollar-lol!

I could never do that. I don't have any money on me 90% of the time, or like $2. My Amex gets me through life

I use the debit card too but allow myself only so much to spend.

You could do it too though with a credit card or debit card. You just have to make sure you don't go over your allotted amount that you would spend if you had the cash in hand.

this is me pretty much.
I download my Amex spending into Quicken and it fits into my spending budget. I look at it almost daily.
I feel I'm in touch with my money...
